Any chance the Communion Rail will be put back at the altar? catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0800122.htm

VATICAN CITY (CNS) – The reverence and awe of Catholics who truly believe they are receiving Jesus in the Eucharist should lead them to kneel and receive Communion on their tongues, said a bishop writing in the Vatican newspaper.

“If some nonbeliever arrived and observed such an act of adoration perhaps he, too, would ‘fall down and worship God, declaring, God is really in your midst,’” wrote Auxiliary Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, quoting from the First Letter to the Corinthians.

In a Jan. 8 article labeled a “historical-liturgical note,” Bishop Schneider reviewed the writings of early church theologians about eucharistic reception and said the practice of laypeople receiving Communion on the tongue was the predominant custom by the sixth century…

I can see no reason why we shouldn’t kneel for communion.

Don’t you want to affirm yourself as dignified and an adult? It looks silly and feels better to receive in the hand as we are adults now not children.
Hmm, not such a good reason to receive standing up, unless you are told to. (I believe we are told to stand up by those who want to destroy our traditions and deny the presence of Christ in the Eucharist)
But out of obedience I stand, in my heart I kneel. I would wish my obedience to my Bishop would someday be given different norms. I can just pray for him and hope for someday to see Catholicism being promoted in my diocese, instead of attacked.

God Bless

What a stupid bigotted comment!! In fact what you say could be construed as a grave sin maligning people like that. I think you should have a serious chat with your priest.

I am confused by your comment (I bolded it). I get what you are saying, but could you clarify it?
And I agree with you about the standing to receive comment. The Protestants did it to signify the fact that they see communion as a symbol. We took it on as an indult after V2, and now it is just out of hand. sigh

I think the poster was trying to be sarcastic and imitating an imaginary person’s bigot argument against kneeling for receiving the Eucharist. I don’t think the poster really feels that way…

So in your heart you know kneeling is right, so you say, but out of obedience you do something else? Sounds like blind obedience, thats not what the church has ever preached. Becareful who you follow if thats how you follow.

Back to the original question, I actually think with the authorization of all parishes to offer TLM it is very likely the Communion Rail may return. When TLM is offered at our parish, at which we receive kneeling, it is impossible for many to get down (or get back up again, in my case 😉 ), so they are using the 4 kneelers we currently have, which is not nearly enough for the numbers turning out. While adding the rails would be inappropriate (architecturally) in some few facilities, in most it could be done easily and utilized as needed or desired.

My Bishop states that we should stand, I have to follow him even though I think it is destroying peoples belief in the real presence. I am not denying the Real Presence, I just need to obey the directions of my diocese, unless there is Sacrilege or a denial of faith. (I am still debating if this is a point at which I should just kneel anyways, I am happy to discuss this to work it out to see what I should do personally)

I agree the comment I made may be bigoted, if you mean by that I am very partial to the Catholic Church and in preserving the truth of its teachings. If you mean it in a prejorative sense then I would object to that, why not give me a reasoned response?
I am not sure why you would say that it is stupid, do you think my statement is unfounded?

Why do we stand, isn’t this used by many to deny the Real Presence and destroy our traditional belief in the truth of the presence of Christ? Everyone knows that, just people are scared to say it. Call me what you want, I do not mind, but please add some content to your response to justify the name calling.

I am quite stupid sometimes, but I would appreciate a reasoned response or I will take it that you concede the discussion and just disagree out of emotion. Please look at the results of the practice of receiving standing up and in the hand, has it increased belief in the Real Presence or has it diminished? What is the purpose of kneeling, what is the purpose of not kneeling?

The reverence and awe of Catholics who truly believe they are receiving Jesus in the Eucharist should lead them to kneel and receive Communion on their tongues, said a bishop writing in the Vatican newspaper.

Funny. St. James of Jerusalem certainly believed that we received the Body and Blood of his foster-brother Jesus in the Eucharist, and his Liturgy calls for receiving in the hand standing.

In most Eastern Churches we receive kneeling and we’ve always done it that way.

I believe the Bishop writing from the Vatican was talking about Latin Catholics.

I would like to ask everyone why people should be prevented from kneeling to receive communion. Obviously anyone who desires to receive communion while kneeling will require a certain amount of logistics (going at the end of the line to prevent tripping ) but that is something that can ALWAYS be managed. I also want to make it clear here that I am not necessarily asking for a Church to build a Communion Rail where one doesn’t exist.

This bishop has oddball views. I never heard the Church saying that receiving in the tongue or in the hand is better. If this is in fact an accurate quote, I doubt that we will hear this view again from any Church authority.
Personally though I would prefer to receive kneeling, although I accept the Church’s injunction to recieve standing (though too it insists that if someone kneels the priest does not have the right to deny him communtion.) So I myself would like to hear more about why standing is the norm.
I see that there is a similar thread here on kneeling or standing. But on that thread there is confusion among the posters between the question about kneeling when receiving communion in front of the church, on the one hand, and the question of kneeling after communion or during the eucharistic prayer, on the other hand, which are entirely different matters. I wonder only why standing when receiving communion is preferable. What reasons does the Church have for its being preferable? That is what I wonder about.

From the GIRM, section 160:
The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of the United States is standing. Communicants should not be denied Holy Communion because they kneel. Rather, such instances should be addressed pastorally, by providing the faithful with proper catechesis on the reasons for this norm.

From the GIRM, section 160:

The universal norm for the Latin rite is still kneeling. The exception (standing) to the universal norm did not and has not abrogated kneeling for Holy Communion. Rome has more than once clarified — how the above is to be understood.

You said that have “more than once clarified — how the above is to be understood.” What does that mean? What has Rome done to clarify the GIRM?

The following are clarifications. You will notice Rome does not attach the stipulation (“Rather, such instances should be addressed pastorally, by providing the faithful with proper catechesis on the reasons for this norm”) — to the peoples right to kneel.
