Kneeling on Sundays

This is inspired by another thread…

I remember reading somewhere (sorry don’t remember where) that in the East, no one kneels at liturgy on Sunday cause kneeling is seen as a type of penance, and Sundays are not days for penance. But in the West people kneel at Mass on Sunday cause kneeling is seen more as humility before God.

My question is, okay so what happens if an Eastern Catholic comes to Mass on Sunday and kneels there? I mean Mass at a Roman Catholic church. Is this somehow against Eastern canons? Yet it’s supported by local (in this case Latin rite) custom. I’m just wondering if this has ever been addressed.

thanks 🙂
They don’t just mean no kneeling, they mean no sitting too – stand aright, especially during pentecost.

As some EC’s and Orthodox actually did tell me. “Take out the pews ? The congregation would never stand for it”

This reminds me of our late parish priest, Rev. Fr. Dr Bohdan Lypsky at St Nicholas Parish (the church featured in the movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”).

The youth of the parish just loved him. Once, when he told him about how untraditional pews in our church were, a number of boys just got up and went to get some hammers. They said they were going to get rid of those pews once and for all . . .

It was all Father could do to prevent them from carrying out their objective . . .

We cannot get rid of the pews in our parishes. For one thing, standing only parishes still have the benches around the side for the elderly. Given that most of our parishioners are senior citizens, we would still need the same amount of benches as our pews now. So there’s no point to even attempt.

Pews are a Protestant invention, as I am told.

If so, then thank God for those Protestants! 🙂

I’m fine with pews/benches as along as there are no kneelers. They’re not needed in an EC parish. And there’s enough room for prostrations.

There is enough room in the pews for prostrations? I have trouble picturing that. The temples, Orthodox and Catholic I’ve been in around here that have pews, or row upon row of chairs, there isn’t room to even make a full bow at the waist.

Indeed. For Lenten worship, we had to resort to the aisles in order to make full prostrations.

I said as long as there is, they probably need to space the pews quite a bit. As it is today, we go out on the aisles to do prostrations. There aren’t that many people for Presanctified Liturgy anyway and there is never a danger of people filling up the open areas.

I can bow to the waist but have no room to extend my hand to the ground.
