Greetings all,
I was curious if anyone knew when kneeling (and/or kneelers)became so prominent in the RCC? I was reading a thread about kneelers and kneeling in the EOC and I remembered that the 20th canon of the 1st Council of Nicea talking about, well here I’ll just repost it:
20th Canon of the 1st Council of Nicaea:
"Since there are some who are bending their knee on Sunday and on the days of Pentacost (from Easter to Pentacost), the holy council has decided, so that there will be uniformity of practice in all things in every diocese, that prayers are to be directed to God from a standing position"
So could one assume that during this time kneeling was not the “norm” in the West, and that perhaps they stood during it like the Eastern Churches? Just curious…
