And may they stand firm in its name to help counter nonsense like this.
And what is untrue in what I said? He did commit genocide.
And no he didnt. Thats historical calumny. He was a product of his time and had his faults and errors. Genocide was not one of them.

And the Black Legend continues…

Columbus did NOT condone nor urge genocide.
But he did it. An entire people. Gone.
Then you should have no trouble identifying what whole people is gone.

Because it seems we have rather sizable amd very loud Native lobby intent on besmirching Columbus’ memory.

No one is claiming Columbus was perfect but genocide is reaching too far.

You can be prepared to provide your sources outside of ex parte claims that a real genocode was committed.

In response to your question, I am also a member. As far as the political debate goes it has no bearing on the OP’s question.
Probably best to start a new thread if someone wants to validate their progressive political agenda.

They were referring to the indigenous populations I believe.

European contact was INEVITABLE. Regardless of people’s moral conduct or ethics, there was no way to prevent this loss of life to disease.
Correct. It is the deaths as a result of enslavement, murder, execution that make up the genocide. Many of those who dies in the Holocaust also died of disease. No one excuses the Nazis and their allies on this ground. Why excuse Columbus? Any evidence that he provided medical help?

If a poster is repeatedly trying to pull a thread off topic, it is best not to respond to them. As an earlier poster suggested, they have the option of presenting their view in a new thread.

They didn’t understand contagious diseases the way we do today. They didn’t even have vaccines! Comparing Columbus to those who perpetrated the Holocaust is ignorant. The assertions of genocide are fantastically absurd and show an appalling lack of historical research. Finally, I’m not going to put any faith into a 42 year old article written from a severely distorted viewpoint.

Some historians say the Chinese brought the Bubonic plague to Europe. Did the Chinese commit genocide because a disease they carried killed millions of Europeans? I don’t think so.

No. That is not the argument I was making.
Then you are going to have to be more explicit in laying out your argument, because it really reads like that is the argument you were making?
