Do you think that it is appropriate for our Kof C chapter to be patronizing a Masonic institution? What are chapter is doing is using a Masonic Golf Course for a K of C branded Tournament, having people sponsor holes to help fund a seminarian, but doing it by giving money and credence to an anti-Catholic institution seems to be kinda like sewing a stitch with one hand while taking it apart with the other hand. I am not comfortable with it and will not be participating. I would think that better discretion would be used than for our K of C to be patronizing a Masonic institution. Am I out of line?

No your not out of line, where their alternatives?

Raise your concerns with someone in authority. Unfortunately not all KOC are good, I guess some of them have forgotten they where setup to combat that perfidious sect.

I personally feel that that is way out of line.Considering that many of our countries founders were supposed to be Masons.Catholics probably could not use our currency.Visit Washington DC ect.

As for golf I was told that the PGA once played at a golf club founded by the mafia.

I think it’s in-appropriate.

Perhaps the first question is, do the Masons actually own the course? Totally? Doing business with them, or the LDS or with a Protestant owned business may or may not be a moral issue.

To begin with, doing business with the Masons is not exactly the same thing as recommending them as a fraternal organization that anyone should join. There are a number of businesses that are closely related to the LDS church, and I would suspect that the Catholic Church would have no opinion on a regional or national meeting of the Knights staying at one of the hotel chains owned by the LDS church.

While there is no question that joining the Masons is forbidden by the Church, many people involved with the Masons are there simply for the fraternal work they do, and are not there because of any passion for the underlying beliefs of the Masonic group itself. Without a whole lot more facts than there are in the OP, it is hard to make any strong decision one way or the other as to the tournament occuring at the course.

Ya want to be extra careful that none of those masonic cooties get under your shirt. It is a far cry from donating to your local planned parenthood clinic. If the Popes can pray in a mosque, I don’t see how chasing those little white balls on a masonic owned course could be considered an endorsement of a local masonic lodge.🙂

What?

Again if we limited everything we do to things(golf courses)that all run by good people most of us would have nothing to do.

The venerable Father Michael J. McGivney who founded the KOC founded them to fight against masonry, not the only reason, but it was one of them.

Repeating yourself does not make it any more true. There ARE golf course that ARE NOT overtly supportive of masonry. They could have used a golf course that does not support an anti-Catholic organisation.

I didn’t read anything in the OP that would lead me to believe that there is an option of another golf course.

While in Europe the Masons were/are very anti-Catholic, we don’t tend to see that in North America and the bishops here even fought to have Masons removed from Canon Law as a forbidden organization.

If you don’t mind, what is the name of the golf course and where is it located?

So, with your line of thinking if a K of C or any Catholic injured with sever burns, it would be wrong to utilize a Masonic burn center?🤷

That is a presumption without facts to support it. Golf courses do not have an abundance of openings for tournaments, and it may well be that due to scheduling, nothing else was available. Yes, undoubtedly there are other courses within reasonable distance of the chapter; but that does not mean that because they exist, that a slot was open for the Knights to have their tournament.

Your Bishops were wrong if they did so and you are ignorant about the Masons, who knows maybe those Bishops even where masons, would explain a lot.

FWIW, I was a Mason until Dec. 31, 2009. I resigned my membership and was confirmed at Easter vigil. In my decades of Masonic membership, I never once heard an anti-Catholic comment. I think that the original lodge was anti but much has changed. It was just a group of middle age men hurrying through the ritual so they could talk and eat. I resigned because of the official Church position and wanted to be a true Catholic. However, the men in the lodge are still my friends and wish me well. My point is that most Masonic men are not against us in today’s world.

I know other ex masons who say otherwise, your local lodge is not freemasonry and nor does its small percentage of the total number of masons represent most masonic men, regardless we are not talking about most members we are talking about the institution itself.

I realize that. I just do not think that all men who wear the square and compass are anti-Catholic. I feel more discomfort in a room full of Baptists.

You raise a very good point. I’m surprised that no one in here of the Catholic faith has responded thus far.

I think that’s because the question was – how to say this? – not very well put. Is there an equivalent Catholic burn ward next door? Then don’t pump your money into Masonic coffers. No? Then go get your burns treated.

I am a Member of the Knights of Columbus, and I do not think this is right.🤷

Is there any documentation of this? I’ve heard it said many times, but the only time I ever tried to find it online, I couldn’t find any first hand evidence. The main initial purpose of KoC, at the very least according to their own website, seems to have been providing life insurance for Catholics, since they couldn’t receive it from the Masons (since Catholics can’t join the Masons). Thus the KoC themselves (currently at least) attribute their beginnings to providing a Catholic-alternative to the Masons. That is a far cry from being some strong group to fight the actual institution/beliefs of the Masons. Again, perhaps I’m missing something, but if so please provide some evidence, as I would be glad to have a more informed opinion.

Either way, I’m pretty sure 80-90% of both KoC and Masons councils in the United States exist for the sole purpose of allowing old men to drink together. Whether they do that together or separately doesn’t seem too terribly important.
