Knights of Columbus

(I wasn’t sure where to put this - this seemed more appropriate).

I have a lot of awesome friends who are members of the Knights of Columbus. They helped my great grandmother very much after my great grandfather died (they were working class Polish immigrants).

My friends who are still in school don’t seem to do much with the knights, but they seem to become more active when they are in the adult world.

I’m 20 , a sophomore in college, and am trying to be a devout Catholic.

Why should I join? What kinds of things can the Knights offer me? Can I do anything to help them out? (I don’t really know what the Knights do besides insurance and serving pancakes after mass!)

I’ve been around two different colleges with very strong K of C organizations. I’m not guaranteeing that your local campus will be the same, but it’s worth checking out.

I am in a college KofC council and have been for the past 6 years and joining our council was certainly one of the better decisions I made in college. When I first joined we didn’t do too many projects, aside from having regular business meetings (which were boring back then) and doing a couple of service projects to benefit local charities. After a couple of very devout young men came through, our council started doing a lot of very good spiritual and service projects which has been very conducive for fostering growth in the Catholic faith while at a liberal, secular institution.

Here’s some of the stuff we do that may or may not be similar to the council you are considering. We do a couple of service projects every year to benefit needy charities, both just doing drives to collect money/items for donation and projects that involve us actually going somewhere and doing manual labor to assist local charities. There’s also a lot of spiritual events that we attend or host, including biweekly recitation of the Rosary, semesterly Holy Hours involving Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (and this is at an extremely, extremely liberal Newman center), attending Stations of the Cross during Lent, and occasional trips to attend the Tridentine Latin Mass in downtown. We also participate in that “Keep Christ in Christmas” project in Advent and had a showing of a couple of orthodox religious DVDs for the parish (and these went over well with the extremely liberal parishioners 👍). A couple of years ago we had a very knowledgeable lecturer that gave a lot of instructive lectures on Catholic theology and social teaching, and we have tried to continue the tradition with Catholic philosophy (most of the guys are engineers/scientists so they actually like the logical, rational discourse haha) so there’s educational opportunities as well.

So there’s a lot of stuff that college councils do that I am proud to have participated in. If the council in question that you are considering joining is a college council, I’d say that you should definitely give serious consideration to joining. They have a conference for college councils in New Haven at the end of September every year and I represented our council 2 years ago. The majority of the attendees were very devout Catholics and I certainly could feel that they had a sense of the sacred when I was around them (actually it caused me to have a pivot point in my faith right then and there).
 
I joined the Knights of Columbus during November of 2001. It has been a great experience. I love helping in various fundraising activities to help the poor and less fortunate. I am very passionate about the Knights and persuade any eligible Catholic men over 18 that I know to become a member.

I wish I joined earlier!!

I’m going to join soon I believe. I was going to do the initiation thing at the college council so there’d be some younger guys but I just can’t stand the parish at the college, all they have is drum and guitar emotional hootenanny masses and it’s as wreckovated as can be.

I’m really not sure what it’s about, I guess I’ll learn.
 
We just had our Pancake Breakfast earlier this month. It went really well. I think joining the Knights of Columbus was a great thing for me to do. It’s very fulfilling to help out your church and your community. By all means, join if you feel it something you want to do. Many thanks to my Brothers posting on this thread.

I wouldn’t ask what the knights can offer you but rather, what you can offer the knights…give it a shot and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
