Knights of Columbus

The reason we have the term “under God” in the pledge is due to the work of the Knights of Columbus. Also, it was the K of C that provided the money for the “popemobile” after John Paul II was shot. Unfortunately my local chapter doesn’t do a lot, other than run cookouts and what have you, and I wish they were more active, but at the same time, I am proud to be a member, and to donate the dues to the organization so that the organization, as a whole, can continue to do its good work.

the Knights here do not conduct “membership drives”, as a man must be invited to join and recommended by other Knights in his parish and approved by his pastor, that is, nominated by people who know him, can attest to his fidelity to Christian lifestyle and involvement and contributions to parish life.

Perhaps I used incorrect terms, but the meaning was true. At our last ‘ministry fair’ they had a table set up for ‘recruitment’. I don’t know what else to call it and I mean no disrespect.

Now hold on here! I know some guys in the K.C.'s who NEVER go to church, let alone pray the Rosary. This is why I am asking questions about them. Thankfully, my questions are being answered.

This is what I’ve gotten from these postings: The organization is sound and they do do good things, however, some councils are more active then others and some members are not very commited. It all dependes on how much a person wants to do?

Slight correction. Dress for the 4th Degree *is formal. For most this means a tuxedo, either purchased or hired for the day. Clergy wear their formal clericals; Servicemen may appear in dress uniform (there was a firefighter so attired in my class). But the chapeau, sword, and other regalia items are not required of everyone, but only for those who volunteer to join the 4th Degree Color Corps. I can’t afford the regalia yet, but when I can I expect to the Color Corps. I did purchase the tux, since I decided that it is about time I owned up to being an adult.

(* At least this is true in my area, and I think throughout the US. I have heard that Assemblies in Canada and Mexico *do *require a sword. The US may have done so in the past.)

Same here. Being a 4th degree’er qualifies you for membership in the Color Corps but you are not REQUIRED to join. I haven’t joined the Color Corps yet because time just does not permit.

There are 4 degrees. The first three are the essential degrees that teach the virtues of charity, unity and fraternity. The fourth degree which is an honorary degree teaches Patriotism. Fourth Degree members are those who you see with the capes, swords and hats.

The Knights are doing their annual membership drive and I was wondering about this group. What are your feelings on them? Good, bad or whatever? Are they supercatholics or just super social?

I joined the Knights a few months ago and highly recommend that you do too. Also, you may wish to read the recently released book “Parish Priest” about the founder of the Knights. Very inspirational story.

I am a 4th degree knight. The activity of the council has to do much with the men involved and the elected Grand Knight. We happen to have a council that is very dedicated to serving our parish and community.

The details of the degrees are not open for discussion in that they involve lessons important to Catholic gentlemen. The degrees are all loyal to Chruch teachings and well put together.

At our meetings we pray at the opening and the closing and at my 4th degree meeting we pray the rosary before the meeting.
A tuxedo is the only formal wear required for the 4th degree, the regalia is for those that wish to join the color corps. I just bought my sword last week.
