I’m thinking of reaching out to other Christians and discussing what and why Catholics believe.

🙂

Hi There, Yes.
Try the LinkedIn forum, Christian Professionals. You’ll have to be Linked in yourself but it’s not a bad idea anyway. I’m a member. I’m in RCIA sshhhh!.
Get your Bible out, and dive in. Ecclesia Militans!

Good for you guys. I’ll be praying for you guys.

God bless.

My prayers are with anyone going into the forums. I’m praying right now. I just popped in to the carm.org site and looked around and I shuddered at all the anti-catholic stuff. I don’t have the charism of apologetics. I can listen, I can research, I just hate going back and forth with people. I grew up in a very hostile family, with lots of arguing, so it’s really hard for me to differentiate simple debate with anger and abuse. My daughter calls it whipped dog syndrome (shake, shake)

HOWEVER, I respect apologists with all my heart.

I’m just a very happy Catholic, so happy to be home, and so willing to be a prayer support to anyone “going in” to those places.

Blessings to you all!

As someone that was active in carm and a couple of other places I have some advice…

Don’t take anything personally… They attack. It’s what they do.
Keep your cool… They want to provoke you to anger…
Pray before you Post!!!
Take breaks… Dive in for a week, than take a short vacation. It’s REAL easy to get burned out in those sites

May God bless and guide you! I’ll keep you in my prayers and may even stick my head back into the fray from time to time…

Stay away from carm. Its full of venom and hate. I posted there for over 2 years. I haven’t posted there for well over 18 months now, and I feel like I’ve broken free from an abusive marriage. Stay far far away from carm.

Peace,

Be brave Matt 28:19!

Don’t be scared off. It’s not that bad really. I come from a Fundamentalist back round so it’s always been Sola Scriptura for me. A real advantage. You won’t get very far quoting The Fathers of the Faith. They have already received too much false information in that area.

Stay with answers as opposed to stating position. You don’t expect any quick conversion, just ask a few questions about scriptures that may not have come up in the Sunday sermon.

The Protestant doctrine approaches scripture with an eye to which “bits” fit the belief already in place. Some things in Luke 1, Or John 6, Or Corinthians for instance are not really looked at very closely.

If you can ask non threatening questions that cause the scripture to be looked at, they will believe what they read quicker than what you say.

Like: Is Mary the Mother of God?, No just Jesus. Was Jesus ever not God? Well no but… The Word of God? Like the Ark of the covenant, right?

You will cause questions to be asked outside the forum. Make their Pastor earn his keep!

How can we give offense at the Lord’s supper, to God, by not discerning the Body of Christ, if the Body is not Really present? Because Paul warns us we could get sick or die if we do?.

Get my drift? The Bible will edify them, if they don’t read around some parts.

I’m new here so please allow me a little latitude in my ignorance.

Yours in Christ, EMC

Very well stated! I’m a Sola Scriptura Catholic myself

How can you be a Catholic that is only Sola Scriptura, when Sola Scriptura is not biblical, and it is considered Heretical, by the Catholic Church herself?

You need the Sacred Scripture yes, but you also need Sacred Traditions and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

God bless.

I’m sorry to the other poster, I’m not Sola now!, I know better. But that was my backround before I got that the Church formed the Bible, not the other way around.

Not that the Bible isn’t the most important tool we have, just that it’s not the only tool we have. Giving up my Sola idea was the turning point, study was the key.

I just communicated poorly. EMC

Dear other poster. You cannot be Catholic and Sola, I’m not and neither are you, the Church never contradicts Scripture. But there is more to know than just the Bible.

I apologize for my misrepresentation, I thought it was clear, but I guess not. EMC

I am not Sola Scriptura in the way many non-Catholic Christians think about it, but I AM Sola Scriptura and Catholic. I have never found a Catholic teaching that can not be defended Sola in Scriptura… Nothing the Church teaches is in opposition to Scripture… Everything the Church teaches is supported in Scripture. I do not RELY on the Sacred Traditions or the Magisterium to defend my beliefs, since those I most often defend against would accept neither… Certainly I study the Early Church, our Traditions and the Magisterium, but my Faith is found fully in Scripture.

I was a Protestant for a couple of decades and dove head long into Scripture Study to “disprove” what I had been “brainwashed” to believe as a cradle Catholic… To my great surprise what I found was that Scripture points directly and undeniably to the Catholic Church. So I consider myself a Sola Scriptura Catholic.

Some (on both sides) will insist that that means I’m not a Catholic. I respectfully disagree.

God bless

There is indeed more to know than just the Bible as you’ve said. However, you know where I learned that fact?

[BIBLEDRB]John 21:25[/BIBLEDRB]

Yep, in Scripture… So to be Sola Scriptura REQUIRES you to believe that you must not be Sola Scriptura… Hence, since I believe in the ENTIRE Bible, I have to believe there are other sources

This to me says that to be Catholic is to be Sola Scriptura… You just have to believe in the WHOLE Bible and not just a few passages.

That make sense?

God bless

Oh, one other thing… On a forum like carm.org, saying you are a Sola Scriptura Catholic takes away the non-Catholic weapon of pulling what Pope said in completely out of context and telling me that I must agree with and defend that one phrase. I can simply say “Sorry, I’m a Sola Scriptura Catholic… Could you quote Scripture to make your point please?”

Basically this ends 90% of arguments I’ve had there…

God bless

Okay for the sake of discussion, bccause I am really interested. If you only use the Bible alone to explain things, how do you explain the Assumption of Mary? The Hypostatic Union? There are some other things that could be asked here.

Divine revelation is present in all three, Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium. You cannot seprate one to the exclusion of the others.

I noticed that you said that your Faith if found fully in Scripture, okay I can see where you are coming from this. But it has taken much from Tradition and the Magisterium to come to a fuller understanding of what the bible says. There is much that was not written that Jesus said and done. What do you say to this?

What do you do when St. Paul says to carry out the Tradiitions that I have shown to you?[now I am not good at quoting Scriptures, but if you are quite familiar with the Scriptures, then you will know what I am talking about.] There’s some problematics problems I am seeing.

As to you wanting to call yourself a Sola Scriptura Catholic, fine, I have no problem with that. We are free to call ourselves what we want. As to whether you are a Catholic or not, that is not my judgement to make, so I reserve judgement.

God bless.

Interesting. Sola Scriptura is not Biblical, T-Shirt I think.

Back to the original question though, It’s pretty easy to end up in and argument on a Protestant forum. It is the thing you want to avoid if you can.

You have to keep in mind why you are there in the first place. If it’s to show what you know and expect some kind of approval (vanity) then you are probably out of luck. Stay here and teach me, I’ll be grateful to add what you know to what I am learning.

If you find yourself frustrated there and end up feeling “who cares what this guy thinks, I know I’m right” (you might very well be) then the familiar spirit wins, the message remains with you. But worst of all you have yet another pride sin to confess…

If somehow you cause a question to be asked about the faith, that the (apostolic) church is the answer to then you get ME, a former fundamentalist who’s in RCIA.

My conversion started years ago and I’d love to tell you the story sometime, but the point would be that it was by degrees and with starts and stops along the way.

A good plan is to answer slowly, not in the heat of emotion, and questions are the best possible way to keep it friendly. We listen to friends, we out argue and even belittle those who attack us ( we shouldn’t but we do). Always remember that the truth has nothing to hide and “I don’t know” but “I’ll find out for you” is not cowardly. Even better is I had not thought of it that way but it certainly deserves some reflection and study.

The battle is against a spirit, and is spiritual. The person you are discussing the Faith with is simply caught in the middle. Don’t cut off any ears!

Yours in Christ, EMC

PS. If you don’t think we need the Church to interpret Scripture, look how easily my simple post was misunderstood, in American English, modern…I mean some one thought I was advocating a new kind of catholicism? Without the Church we are lost. J.M.J.
