I was wondering if people could share about times in their life when every thing on the outside was horrible (eg financial difficulties, bad health, friction between family members, loosing friends or anything you can think of) and you still had the peace of the Lord.

Also, how have you heard God’s voice guide you at those times

Thanks

Suddenly, you lose influence. control was an illusion. Perhaps, one was blind to a problem or ran away from it but, at least, that had a back traceable cause. What really stings, are those external circumstances or, my fave, bad timing which collapse the structure you thought could last a bit longer. It’s the injustice that gets you, and you think of Jonah, Jobe, or even Milton: . . . the worst were full of vigor, while the best lacked all conviction. Have a listen to Joanie Mitchell’s “If”, it pretty much sums it up and is Biblically based.

When you feel the weight, you feel the cross. “Offer it up.” Just what does that mean? For myself, I found it in Mother Angelica’s meditation for the fourth Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary: . . . may my cross be united with Your Cross, so that together we may Glorify the Father and save souls. Then let it go, and don’t worry your supply may be plentiful.

Find the bless in the mess: Just writing this reply with a computer with electricity and an internet connection is something many don’t have. How fortunate is that! Give thanks to God in all things.

Find a devotion and get out of yourself. That’s how you can give when you thought you lost everything. Time.

This is distilled from uncertainty since 2009, and collapse since 2011. Usually, you just have to go 'round the houses, but maybe, just maybe, you’ll find a sign-post or short-cut here.

Yes, a good amount of rest, and a devotion will help. Being grateful for the good things will benefit as well. Also try to have a daily amount of quiet time with God and Jesus, away from everything else.

This makes me sound a little crazier than I like, but when I was trying to decide whether to convert or not I would often go to noon masses by myself to think things over. One time while there I prayed for some sign. When I got back in the car, a Josh Groban song was playing: “You have everything you need, if you just believe.”

I was going through a real rough patch with my faith again this Lent/Easter for some reason. Went to church last week and the homily was all about doubt and how everyone faces it at some point. Got in the car and the song playing was “I can see clearly now, the rain is gone.”

Not sure if those are signs or just DJ preferences, but both stuck out to me.

Don’t try and listen for a voice, don’t try and figure out what the plan is, don’t try and fix things.
I do see a lot of wisdom in letting go as opposed to trying and fix things. However, I don’t think I can just sit and put my feet up and do nothing. I need to do my part and I am not sure what that is

I have been in an extremely difficult time for about a year (husband divorcing me), and yet people tell me at times that I seem to glow with joy. At those times, I feel an abundance of God love and feel his hand gently guiding me, and I have tremendous confidence in that. Other times I still really struggle.

So, how do you know when/where God is guiding you? I think that the first step is to expect God to guide you, and watch for it. Like someone said, maybe something in a homily, even a song on the radio. Could be total coincidence, but with the thoughts in your head… and if it aligns with you faith… Sometimes God is more direct, and literally throws things at you. I kept running into the word ‘serenity’ over and over and over again, in a homily referencing Romans 8:28, on a bumper sticker, etc. I believe that is what God wanted me to work towards; I believe it was Him telling me that he’s going to make some good out of my situation, and that I have to try to achieve serenity. Being pretty sure and having faith that God was essentially telling me that everything was going to be OK, even in my awful situation, was what gave me peace and joy.

I also think that you have to be very in tune with your faith. Study the bible, go to mass, receive the sacraments, pray. And you have to carefully discern what you think God is guiding you to; you can easily misinterpret. Rick Warren in ‘A Purpose Driven Life’ describes listening to the Holy Spirit as putting your sail up in a boat and turning it so that you catch the Spirit’s wind so that it can guide your life. And sometimes you don’t perceive anything. In that case, I usually try what I think is right and continue to pray; it is likely that the idea about what you want to do is God guiding you. And then to be open to being directed in a different direction (paying attention to your sail and adjusting it to continue to catch the wind).

I hope that this is helpful!
