I had a student in my conformation one class ask me,“Why did God make us?”. I answered him that we cannot know his mind but that we do know his nature. I gave examples of God being good, merciful and just. I told him that it is impossible to know God in His mind and why he would want to create us. I told him though that God does treat us good, just and mercifully. He deemed this answer unsatisfatory wanting a definite answer. I told him there may be nobody on earth able to give him an answer. Long story short was this an ok answer?

Good ole’ Baltimore Catechism time:
  1. Q. Why did God make you?
    A. God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him for ever in heaven.

I touched on this in my most recent blog. The definite answer he’s searching for (which he probably won’t like either) is simple, “God made us because He loves us.” The question is not so much why God made us, but how do we cooperate with His love?
