Hello all,

I am currently a single man, but I am of the age where I would like to
find someone to marry and have a family. I have begun to think more
deeply about what this means and if it is truly my calling.

I have been thinking about a couple of things lately which give me some pause.

and please bear with me, I am being serious.

I have highway driving anxiety and sometimes have to pull over because my hands sweat.
I am thinking this is a terrible trait for a father to have, what about when I need to drive my family somewhere, its my responsibility to ensure their safety.

Also, I see my sister changing diapers of her daughter, and I must admit, I am kind of squeamish about doing that.

Do you think these are signs that I am not called to be a father?

No. First, many people have driving-related phobias. My own mother was terrified of driving over bridges when we were younger (I don’t know if she still is). She did it though, because sometimes she just had to. I never knew she was so afraid until I was much older. I just knew that we had to be quiet when driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Md. It did not mean she was not meant to be a mother; it just meant she had an irrational fear.
As for being squeamish about changing dirty diapers: who isn’t? I don’t know of a single person who relishes the idea! LOL!

Before I became a mother I would literally almost throw up seeing a diaper but it’s different when it’s your own child. I dunno it’s just not as gross fro some reason, haha. I would just pray and discern about your calling and maybe talk to a priest but I don’t think these things exclude you from fatherhood. Good Luck!

You’ve stated that you are still Single. So your 1st step would be in getting Married. It’s not like a guy sends out applications to prospective women. So - talk to God about your desire to find a Godly woman to become your future wife. Then BE the man that a woman would Want to get to know and marry. Maybe God has a spouse for you and maybe Not. So - be the Godly Single man that God wants you to be. Don’t be Looking for a wife – just be focused on your education or job / career, etc.

Single people seem to Want to get married. Married people seem to complain about ‘whatever’ ‘The grass usually looks better on the Other side.’

If your church has ‘single’s functions’ go to them.

Every man is called to be a father in some sense or another. Why do you think we call our priests “Father?” Don’t focus on the yes or no; focus on the how.

There’s a difference between a single man wanting to be married and having a family – taking care of his children. And a man who feels called to be a pastor / elder / bishop of a church. In 1 Timothy 3: 1-7 or so. we are given Biblical qualifications for an ‘overseer’ / elder of a congregation. The first one listed is to be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, etc.

I thought that the Catholic church had their priests being single / celebet – Jesus Christ is our High Priest.

I’d like to invite you to join my group by clicking on my sig below. If you are praying for your vocation to marriage and for your future wife, well and good. If not, it’s not too late to start.

I feel called to the vocation of marriage. There are times when I also wonder if I have the qualities of being a mother. I have a really fun, active, spirited, and smart 2 year old nephew. We all agree that it’s exhausting to take care of him. 🙂 When it’s time to change his diapers, I also cringe when it’s poo because of the smell. Of course I’m reminded that I’ll be dealing with that when I have my own children in the future. I don’t think you should worry about that as it’s very normal.

I’m a father. What you’re talking about has next to no connection to being a father.
