if you are in mortal sin would you know for sure or would it be something you arent totally aware of and would you ever forget if you are?

1.) Full Knowledge
2.) Deliberate Consent
3.) Grave Matter

Reflect on that and it should answer your question. Gray areas do arise which means prudence is necessary for best judgement. If in doubt, go to confession.

I think it’s definitely possible that Satan could trick us into believing that mortal sins are only venial. In other words, it seems that we could know at the time we committed the sin that it was mortal, but then we could be convinced later that we were just being too hard on ourselves. This will happen more often and be more confusing if we don’t make it a point to study and pray daily. Forming our consciences is step 1.

If in doubt, pray to the Holy Spirit to show you your sins clearly. Then, go to Confession and ask the priest to help you as well. Ask if he can give you a rule of thumb to apply in the future, and then trust your confessor.

Compendium issued by Pope Benedict XVI
  1. When does one commit a mortal sin?
1855-1861
1874

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. This sin destroys charity in us, deprives us of sanctifying grace, and, if unrepented, leads us to the eternal death of hell. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance or Reconciliation.
  1. When does one commit a venial sin?
1862-1864
1875

One commits a venial sin, which is essentially different from a mortal sin, when the matter involved is less serious or, even if it is grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. Venial sin does not break the covenant with God but it weakens charity and manifests a disordered affection for created goods. It impedes the progress of a soul in the exercise of the virtues and in the practice of moral good. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

Depends on the person …the state of their conscience etc…and what one meant by the term “for sure”.

We are to “examine” our conscience.

Avoiding one the one hand laxity and on the other scruples.
