If you are “feeling pulled” in a direction, how can “you” (generically) tell if that is the work of the Holy Spirit, and be sure you’re not simply rationalizing or being otherwise deceived by human fallible sinful “feeling”?

One good way is talking about it with someone wise and godly.

Be saturated in prayer. Pray always for the Holy Spirit to guide you. Turn off the junk of the world, and look for Him in every moment. God does not cast out those who diligently seek Him. Don’t trust feelings, just have faith. Imagine if David consulted his natural feelings when facing the giant. Instead he had faith and God is faithful. Listen to the reasoning faculties of the mind before “feelings” and bring reason under subjection to faith.

This is a good question I myself often wonder about. Because I sometimes confuse my pride for the holy spirit speaking to me. And I know many people who I would consider Godly that (though good intentioned) teach doctrine that is non catholic.

I mean there are many liberal priests who may even give you inaccurate advice.
I suppose one of the prior posts has a good solution. Prayer. Prayer puts your mind in Gods heart and forces you to consider from where your intentions are coming from.

Ordinarily I would go that route, but in this instance, when I’m trying to decide whether I should be Protestant or Catholic, anyone whom I’d ask would be one or the other and it seems that would unduly influence their opinion on where the Holy Spirit wants me to be.
