In light of this discussion regarding Moral and Ceremonial Laws, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on Jesus’ many entanglements with the authorities of his day.

I would be willing to bet that Jesus constantly upheld the former while occasionally breaking the latter, and that is what got him in trouble with the Pharisees.

Reform Judaism, probably unwittingly, has really followed in the footsteps of Jesus regarding the practice of the Law, if not the notion of Messiahship or divinity. And Jesus is probably the first Reform Jew! This is because Jesus understood the essence of the Law better than most other Jews of the orthodox Pharasaic movement although there were some exceptions. He was practicing what Hillel the Elder had previously stated about the Law, as well as what the Prophets of the Hebrew Bible had proclaimed. The Karaite Jews, who reject in its entirety the Oral Law (Talmud), still focus only on the DETAILS found in the Written Law (Torah); whereas the Nazarene Jews, who believe Jesus to be the Messiah although they deny His divinity, maintain that Jesus was interpreting the Law in GREATER detail by appreciating and understanding it more profoundly.

Ah…fasting. Yes, now I understand. We do have a few Church disciplines like that, so I guess they are OUR Ceremonial Laws.
