When my parish says the penitential rite (I confess to almighty God), it excludes the kyrie afterwards. They say it is optional. Is it? If not, would omitting it invalidate the Mass?

Thanks.

No, the Mass is not invalidated.

The Kyrie is actually optional…as long as a valid alternative is used. If the Kyrie is used, the “I Confess…” is not used. To use both would be redundant as they both pertain to the same thing.

The Kyrie is included and preferably sung after the confiteor. Penitential rites A and B are followed by the Kyrie while form C has it incorporated into the form .

Here’s a link on the EWTN site taken from Zenit with the answer.

It sounds as if someone has this backward. When the expanded *Kyrie *litany (“You were sent to heal the contrite, Lord have mercy,” etc.) is used, then the *Kyrie *is not said or sung. When the Asperges (rite of sprinkling with holy water) is used, the Kyrie is not. But when the Confiteor is recited, the Kyrie follows.

Thats why I love my TLM i will get Asperges, my Confetior, and my Kyrie. I dont have to do any bloody algerbra. If you use A and B dont use C then if b is used with c you can use a if u like blah blah blah.

“heres the mass do it . . . stop the nonsense”

I was taught the Kyrie was probably the oldest single unchanged part of the Mass remaining. It was the only part still said in Greek, well used to be said in Greek anyway. It is a very powerful prayer of supplication and I think it should be restored, in it’s original form, all nine repetitions. There was no valid reason that I can think of to remove it or make it optional.

Those who advocate return to the primitive church should be firmly in line behind this one.

Unfortunately for the more obedient faithful, the only action which could invalidate the Mass is messing with the words of institution. This makes many a priest feel quite free to play with the “nonessentials.”

However, as many have noted, the current missal explicitly calls for the omission of the Kyrie if another rite, such as the Asperges, is used. So go ahead and be suspicious of the licitness of the action (unless your priest is very trustworthy), find out for yourself when and when not the Kyrie is used, but trust that despite counltess good efforts it is not as easy to invalidate the Eucharist as some might believe.

Both are acts of penitence, but not the same thing. The Confiteor confesses our guilt before God and the Church then goes on to ask the intercession of the Church before God. The Kyrie, on the other hand, is a direct appeal by us to God to have mercy. In my book, that’s not redundant, and I’d much rather see the traditional usage of both retained.
