This is one of the times I may agree with Cardinal Mahony
L.A. Cardinal to Defy Illegal Immigration Bill
Los Angeles Cardinal Roger M. Mahony said Wednesday he would instruct his priests to defy a proposed federal requirement that churches check the legal status of parishioners before helping them.
The U.S. House of Representatives included the requirement in an immigration bill that the Senate Judiciary Committee is to begin debating this week. The legislation also would penalize social organizations that refuse to meet its requirements.

Finally, something from Cardinal Mahony that I agree with. 👍

The Church has a Divine Mandate to feed, clothe, shelter and offer spiritual guidance to all of God’s people.

Civil Law has no power or jurisdiction over that.

This is a way for congress to look like its actually doing something about illegal immigration. Instead of trying to improve the immigration system, they’ll go after the Church and anyone else who is trying to deal with the problems that have arisen because our immigration system has been in disrepair for many years.

The govt. has dropped the ball on immigration. It is the Church’s job to care for the people caught up in this mess, not to do the INS’ job for them. This is outrageous. Hands off our Church!

Cardinal Mahoney will do any thing to deflect the spotlight from his part in the scandal. Also he and his associates have no influence in the govt. of California. The last time they went to Sacramento to lobby .They were sent home withot even a hearing.

Of course not, even Mahony isn’t radical enought for Sacramento.

I mean, what could a celibate, heterosexual white male have to say that might be of interest to anyone in Sacramento.

I don’t fault Mahony for the cool reception there, I fault the electorate of CA in general, and the Bay Area in particular.

I recall a few years ago he was invited to Sacramento for a hearing on abortion. As I remember they offered to schedule him for any Wednesday afternoon in the next two months. He was unable to attend because he had too many Confimations to do.

So what’s your point? Is Wednesday afternoon “abortion hearing time” in Sacremento? There are 4 other business days in the week.

So when Cardinal Mahoney does something right you are saying that he is only doing it to cover up his wrongs?

Now this attitude is what the Bible is speaking about when it says not to judge others.

While on the one hand I think the bishops vocalize their political opinions too loudly on some issues that allow for legitimate disagreement among faithful Catholics, I still think the Church has a certain obligation to help the poor no matter what their legal status. At the same time, considering that illegal immigration is illegal, no matter whether one thinks it should be or not, perhaps there is some sort of comprimise possible. The Church could meet basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, etc., even counciling on how to regularize one’s legal status, but perhaps only offer other less basic services (I’m not sure what ranges of help we’re talking about here) to those who are in compliance with the law. We need to carefully discern how to balance our imperative charity with the need to obey legitimate civil laws.

Wow, how rude was the presenter? I hope the Cardinal choses to respond to this, but say something really clever, and lead by example showing love.

That particular committee met only on Wednesdays due to other legislative duties of its members. He had his choice of 8 to 12 Wednesdays, but claimed he could not spare time on any of them due to the Confirmation schedules. He has a number of auxiliary bishops, and Wednesday is not the only day of the week, or even the most popular day of the week, for Confirmations.

Throw in most of the cities and counties on the coast too.

I dunno… we need to get illegal’s to either come over legal… or leave… not give them an incentive to cross illegally IMO.

House Bill 4437, passed last December 16th, would make it a criminal offense to knowingly assist illegals in evading immigration laws."
Does this mean that Cardinal Mahony is asking Catholics to violate federal law on this issue?

Kirane, what is your religion?

Good for Mahony! He’s doing the right thing on this! I hope all the Bishops in the US take this stand!

I also agree with Cardinal Mahony’s opinion. Why is the government conscripting churches to do the job the INS is supposed to do, at the expense of their mission to spread their faith? I for one do not want to have to show my passport in order to receive communion, or register at a parish.
Code:
And why is the government denying the right to exercise religion to "illegal immigrants"?
