La Crosse, WI

My wife and I are currently considering a relocation to La Crosse Wisconsin. That area of the country looks beautiful and it appears that this area of Wisconsin has a deep rooted Catholic heritage. I see Cardinal Burke was bishop in La Crosse. I also see that there are sisters of perpetual adoration there along with a Catholic schools, Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine, etc.

It all looks great on paper. Does anyone have any experience with the Church in the area? Pros and cons?

We are from the Lincoln Diocese in Nebraska, which has a reputation for being very devout and orthodox. And, we love living in the diocese! We are very traditional and the “progressive” style does not fit our family.

Husband and I passed through on a cross country trip awhile ago.
There is a beautiful shell grotto on a hill outside of town.
Seemed like a pretty cool place overall, just ignore the ubiquitous Cheesehead memorabilia!

I from Madison, WI and while I’m not terribly familiar with La Crosse, I can agree that it is beautiful up over there along the Mississippi River with Winona, MN just across the river. Bishop William Callahan came from the Milwaukee Archdiocese and he’s a good bishop, though perhaps not quite of the orthodox caliber of Bishop Bruskewitz & Bishop Conley. They do seem to have many good young priests there as well.

I have to put in a good word about my own bishop, Bishop Robert Morlino of Madison. He’s incredible, smart, and very orthodox. He wears traditional vestments, has been generous with providing the traditional Latin Mass, and outspoken on the Church’s teachings, particularly on homosexuality, contraception, and abortion. While we have some priest shortages in parishes (I don’t fault him so much as his predecessor who didn’t make vocations a priority), he has brought in some very orthodox priests, namely the priests of the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest.

God bless you in your decision making. Yes…if you come to WI, you have to get a cheesehead!

If you care about good quality sacred music, consider joining the Cathedral parish. Their sacred music program is second to none and the new pipe organ which was installed in 2010 is probably the finest around. And I still think that cathedral–although modern (1962)–is probably the most beautiful church I’ve ever been in.

For what it’s worth, I used to work with (not for) their correctional (i.e. jail) staff. They were actually known to be one of the most pleasent sites to work with (and I worked with correctional facilities across the US).

I became an expert at driving sideways my first winter in WI.
My last winter, I discovered I actually did know how to get out of a skid as I moved out of the clearly bad icy patch into a clear path only to start skidding straight toward the cop car that was working with a another vehicle on the side of the road. Thankfully, I avoided any collision and was able to continue on my way.
