VERY faithful. I know the magazine very well; they always follow the official line of the Vatican and publish only articles that are flattering towards the pope (Benedict XVI, now Francis). So the article about Boff is to be understood simply like “look, even a rebel like Boff praises Pope Francis”.

Sure. But not in this case, as VI is not a tabloid. “Insider” here means only that they have very good connections at the Vatican press office and the correct insight about the kind of discussions that Vatican wants to promote and stimulate.

Andrea Tornielli is a good guy (he is the editor for that section of the paper)

But there is one thing that you MUST remember when either reading that or Sandro Magister’s section of L’EspressoChiesa.

They are Italian.

Reading an Italian paper is a little like watching an Italian movie. They get a LOT more breathless quickly than we are used to. As long as you keep that in mind, they have a lot of good insight. Not the Magisterium. But good insight.

(Lived in Italy for 3 years…so I’m speaking of the Italian press from experience)

I’ve never lived in Italy, but that’s been my impression as well. The Italians seem like a passionate people. 🙂
 
markomalley made a good point.

I would also add that *La Stampa *is a secular newspaper, owned by the Agnelli family (FIAT). It has in the past published stories unfavourable to Pope Benedict. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have some good insights or some good writers, but it is not the official Vatican news source.
