Yesterday during Fr. Pacwa’s radios how someone called in and asked about a labyrinth being built at a church. I seem to remember Fr. Mitch saying it was a bad idea and he didn’t support such a concept. Fast forward to today and I happen across a website for an oratory close by that claims the have a labyrinth prayer garden, for use by people of all faiths. Can someone help me to understand what it is and if it is supported by the Catholic Church?

Thanks so much!

Labyrinths are the domain of skulking lurkers, furtive creepers, and ne’er do well’s.

Labyrinths are a front for cranny’s nooks.

Recently, i heard something similar; and took for granted it was all baloney. Maybe its not, then. Itll be interesting to see what your thread digs up.

Jones, I appreciate your response. What can you offer to support this statement? It seems rather subjective to me and more opinion than the teaching of the Church. Anything you can add would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

NOT KOSHER!!!

this article explains it well: womenofgrace.com/newage/?p=984
Very interesting article. I greatly appreciate the (name removed by moderator)ut. I wonder how, when it appears these are not Catholic, their are so many of them in Catholic churches, even a Catholic cathedral (Cathedral at Chartes, France) from the 14th century. I find this incredibly confusing.

Does anyone know if the Church has made any statement, or a Bishop spoken out? I seem to find priests who have strong opinions against it, but priests who also favor it.

As you say, they are present in these historic churches, so there is a legitimate use of them. Walking them was a devotion used as a substitute for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. There’s no intrinsic reason it can’t still be used this way.

The danger is that the modern Labyrinth movement has significant heterodox components. So it is harder to do the devotion with the right context.

That certainly helps to clear some things up for me. So basically, they were originally intended to be a proper Catholic devotion and could still be used as such today, but unfortunately are misunderstood or misused by some. Thanks!
