I had a sobering experience as I traded at a street market today, one that was reflected at the time of the referendum re same sex marriage here in Ireland when I saw women torn emotionally apart by their love for family members and their duty to the Church. I did nto fully realise that few seem to actually know why same marriage is wrong ( forgive please any clumsy expression… very tired indeed) The lady today was certainly Catholic, probably with little education and a family person. Her words re this were " Jesus loves everyone." and suddenly it made sense. I was a teacher long ago and thankfully my skill came back and I explained very simply and clearly that YES He does love everyone, but asks a certain way of life from those who love Him. That marriage is between a man and a woman and that we must not have sex outside marriage and that sex between same sex people is not allowed IF we love Jesus and obey Him, that this is in the Bible, She had never heard this. And the gay lobby plays so heavily on the “Jesus loves everyone” words. She listened then said, " It is very complicated" and I replied that no it is very simple. IF we love Jesus then we will obey Him. It has affected so much; I remember in the run up to the referendum one priest explained these things clearly to his parishioners and said they should not vote yes and members walked out. Sigh…

You gave the woman a great, though simple and straightforward explanation, and charitably so. Perhaps she’ll think about and consider what you said 🙂

…The lady today was certainly Catholic, probably with little education and a family person. Her words re this were “Jesus loves everyone.” …
Unfortunately, this is about as far as the average person wants to hear.

This episode of Catholic Answers Live was a good one: catholic.com/radio/shows/marriage-now-what-30514

I think they hit the nail on the head by addressing the fact that since so many people have committed sexual sin, they adopt either “I can’t be a hypocrite view” or the “I don’t believe the Church in regards to hetrosexual sexual sin, so I can’t believe in homosexual sin.” Plus, when people look up sodomy and realize that oral sex is part of it, they decide that sodomy isn’t mortally sinful, or that they can’t “damn” others for a different version of sodomy.

Unfortunately, this is about as far as the average person wants to hear.
:sad_yes: And trying to go beyond that, as the OP did wonderfully (👍) is often viewed as being “judgmental”, “bigoted”, or “homophobic.” 🤷

Right! They say, “No, no, Jesus wants everyone to be happy!”

Right! They say, “No, no, Jesus wants everyone to be happy!”
Which is a meaningless sentiment, since the secular understanding of happiness is transient and empty. Happiness to them has no root in anything except personal desires, and as such cannot lead to anything other than self-worship. :banghead:

OP, I applaud you for how you handled the situation! 👍 :clapping:
