Suppost to be a simple matter right ?

How long should they take ? 6 months … 18 months ? For a Catholic married to a Protestant, outside the Church — first marriage for both. Civil divorce has occurred, 4 yrs ago.

If the Catholic’s baptismal certificate shows no marriage, the priest has been known to deal with it in my diocese, although that’s not the norm. If the proper documents are presented it’s a matter of a few weeks.

It was just two weeks for someone I knew who was a non-practicing Catholic at the time, and married a young lady who had never been baptized, in a Protestant church.

Ask a priest, because some situations are a bit more complicated.

Why all of these questions on different forums today about nullity, Newt Gingrich, etc?

Lack of form is not technically a decree of nullity. It is an administrative paperwork process to confirm freedom to marry. This administrative process is used in the US and Canada, and possibly some other countries. It involves submitting baptismal records, civil marriage and divorce records along with a 1-2 page form.

The length of time it takes to process after all the paperwork is gathered and submitted depends upon the diocese and their staff. It is typically a couple of weeks, but could be a few months in a large, busy diocese.
