Talking to a Protestant and this question came up. If Mary is so important, why does she not get any mentions at all in the Epistles?

Your friend does make a valid point to some extent. However, the epistles are not narratives. Many times they are responses to letters or concerns communicated to the epistle writer. In some cases, it can almost be like listening to a friend talking to someone on their phone and trying to figure out what the other person was saying by the responses your friend is giving.

The New Testament is a story about Jesus. Mary is a very important supporting figure.

Erm ?? Can you clarify what you are asking? The bible was compiled after the Epistles and the Gospels were written. So of course the “bible” wouldn’t be mentioned in either of them.

You are speaking of the New Testament, yes? The Hebrew Bible had been compiled, used, and mentioned during the time of Jesus’s life on earth as well as in the texts of the Gospels, letters, and other writings. Christians DID do an add-on to those Scriptures.

Ratio was asking about NT books so that is how I replied.

I am aware that OT books had been compiled as a group as well, just not sure about the canon which I thought was itself revised later on and lead to leaving part of the OT canon (used by Catholics) out of the post reformation bible. However, I am no expert on that history.

Old or New testament? What did they add? If you are talking about the books that are in the Catholic OT, those books were not add ons. The Jews after the time of Jesus excluded the books written in Greek. The Catholic view is that the OT that was in place when Jesus was alive stands, because the Jews no longer had the authority to change the scriptures.

Simple sexism? Women have been an afterthought throughout history. It’s gotten a little better, but we are still valued for our bodies and being non-confrontational much more than men.

Mary is mentioned more than any other woman in Bible, and is mentioned at least twice in the Epistles.

Luke 1:28 – “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!”

Luke 1:28 – “Blessed are you among women!”

Luke 1:42 – “Blessed are you among women!”

Luke 1:45 – “Blessed is she who believed!”

Luke 1:48 – “All generations will call me blessed.”

Luke 1:49 – “For the Almighty has done great things for me.”

Luke 1:43 – “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

Luke 1:46 – “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior!”

Luke 1:48 – “He has regarded the lowly estate of His handmaid.”

Luke 1:30 – “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”

Luke 1:38 – “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done unto me according to thy Word.”

Luke 2:35 – “And a sword will pierce your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Luke 2:19 – “But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

Luke 2:51 – “And his mother kept all these things in her heart.”

Mark 3:34-35 – “Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

John 2:4 – “Jesus said to her, ‘Dear woman, what is that to me and to thee? My hour has not yet come.’ ”

John 2:5 – “His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ ”

John 19:26-27 – “Woman, behold, your son!” – “Behold, your mother!”

John 19:27 – “And from that hour the disciple took her as his own.”

Isaiah 7:14 – “The Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Isaiah 66:7 – “Before she was in labor she gave birth; before her pain came upon her she was delivered of a son.”

Psalms 45:9 – “At your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.”

Psalms 45:10-13 – “Hear, O daughter…the people of Tyre will sue your favor with gifts, the richest of the people with all kinds of wealth.”

Psalms 45:13-14 – “The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes; in many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions, her escort, in her train.”

Zechariah 2:10 – “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion; for lo, I come and I will dwell in the midst of you, says the Lord.”

Zechariah 3:14 – “Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!”

Micah 5:2-3 – “Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is to give birth has borne.”

Acts 1:14 – “All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.”

Galatians 4:4-5 – “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law.”

Ephesians 5:31-32 – “ ‘a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This mystery is a profound one, and I say that it refers to Christ and the Church.”

Revelation 12:1-6 – “And a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”

You know what else isn’t in the Bible? The doctrine of Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone). Ask your Protestant friend about that.

Don’t forget Songs. Wisdom, Sirach, and Proverbs also have some Marian verses.

Some say it was because Mary (out of humility) didn’t want to draw attention to herself.

(To some) She is indirectly mentioned as a throne of grace in Hebrews 4:16.

Don’t forget Genesis either:”I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.” (DRB)
