I have come across some women who feel that makeup is too materialistic. Comments. Opinions.

***Like all things, it can be misused…can be a source of vanity.

If you look at my profile on here, there are some pics with makeup and without…see if you can tell the ones without?😛 I feel that just a little makeup, shapes a woman’s features…and for me, can make me ‘look’ more awake, even if I’m not! 😃

I don’t wear a lot…I just wear it to put a little color on my face…and I don’t wear it if I’m hanging out at the house, going grocery shopping, etc…

I don’t see it as materialistic…Buying anything we don’t absolutely ‘need’ then could be considered materialistic…it depends on one’s motivation for wearing it. If it’s vanity, that is not good. But, if it just accentuates certain features, that’s not a bad thing.

Just my two cents. :)***

Yes, I do, because if I didn’t, I’d scare away the small children with whom I work.😃

***Oh, I just noticed your poll–you’re including perfume…YES, I LOVE PERFUME. That’s my weakness. I love shopping for perfume, smelling nice for hubby…for myself. I love clean scents. Soap just isn’t enough. 😛

I also love my husband to wear cologne…Not a lot…but, a little dab. :)***

I sometimes wear perfume because I enjoy the scent. 🙂

I don’t wear makeup because I believe my face is perfectly fine the way it is.
Others may disagree … 😛

I wear perfume every day, I just enjoy it. Nothing strong, but a soft, pretty scent.
I wear a little make-up. I used to wear more, but the older I get, the more I just don’t like it. My skin tone is uneven, so I do wear foundation to even it out and some powder. Some days I wear some eyeshadow, but very light.
I wish I hadn’t started wearing it years ago when I was a teen and had good skin! I didn’t need it then, but didn’t feel I was pretty enough…so silly. I went out to the store the other day without any make-up on for the first time in years and no one ran away screaming, so I guess I’m not that scary looking after all!

There aren’t just 2 sides to this makeup being “vanity” issue…
  1. Yes, makeup can be a vanity issue.
  2. Makeup can be worn without any vanity issues.
  3. Going without makeup is possible without any judgmental issues.
  4. Refusing to wear makeup because anyone who does is vain (hence, a judgment issue).
I would steer clear of 1 and 4. 😉

what Em said
never have found a brand that does not trigger allergic reaction, and I have tried them all.

agreed:thumbsup:

I don’t wear it because I don’t have the time to put it on. I might randomly wear it for something like a semi-formal, but I feel that God accepts me as I am, imperfections and all… I’m working really hard for my wrinkles and can’t wait for them to show up… I know that sounds really strange but it’s something to show for how long you’ve lived I don’t really want to look like I’m the same age my entire life.

I don’t wear makeup for a combination of reasons.

I don’t like covering my skin with stuff- it feels slightly suffocating (heavy lotion bothers me too.)

I hate mornings- HATE them- and anything that involves steps or thought and attention (applying makeup would), anything that I can’t sleep-walk through, is just out. And then you’ve got to reapply the darn stuff during the day.

I never learned to apply it properly.

I don’t really have the budget for it, anyway.

What it really comes down to (and no matter how I try to word this, it just sounds bad) I don’t think of it as a necessity. I mean physical appearance (beyond neat and clean) is just not the highest priority for me. It is a priority, but it’s pretty low on the list, and I’m not up for making a special effort to improve it on a daily basis. (Yup, sounds bad.) I would for special occasions-- wedding day, etc.

OTOH, I certainly wouldn’t judge anyone for wearing makeup (how silly!) And living on this nasty muggy East Coast definitely has me searching for pleasant light perfume…

Nope, neither.

I have never found any eye makeup that does not irritate my contacts.

I wore a very little makeup in college, but only for “nights out”.

I have recently discovered some gray hair…so I was perusing some of my options in the hair coloring aisle at a local discount store a month or so ago. My 15 year old quickly said, “Why would you want to do that? People who color their hair and wear too much makeup all the time are not real. I like real people.”

My oldest had Prom this weekend. His date was beautiful and they had a good time. His first comment when he retired for the night, though, was, “She had too much makeup on. Why do girls do that?”

👍👍:D:thumbsup:👍

Almost never: I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy, so anything that seems ‘really girly’ is just not my thing; don’t like anything on my face (that same ‘suffocating’ feeling a pp mentioned); don’t like not having the freedom to rub/wipe/splash my face; hate getting ready to go out anywhere for longer than 10mins, not to mention not appreciating having to wipe it off once I’m home… not worth it to me 🤷

I don’t see it as a particularly dangerous vanity risk for the vast majority of women 🤷 Most women I know who use makeup use it tastefully and consider it as little more than being decently groomed for appearing in public.

I am a non makeup wearing gal. I dont have time for it, on or off! I also dont like the idea of all the toxins being absorbed by my skin, and I hate the way it feels.
I am not a professional whose appearance is a big deal, the crowd I am most with is not interested in how I look, but where my heart is. Children, other homeschool moms, autistic kids (who wouldnt notice either way), and I sell toys and educational products, I guess I am all about being carefree and relaxed.
I am always clean and my hair is done up well ( unless I am cleaning the garage!) So make up is not neccessary!
As for perfume, Essential oils in my coconut oil moisturizer is about it! Lavender to keep me calm! I am sooo old lady! for such a young person!

Yep I wear make-up. I only wear eye shadow and mascare though. I am of irish heritage so i have that nice ivory skin coloring. So base doesn’t even show up so no point in wearing it. I can go with out make up and not have a problem with it especially if i am just cleaning house or not going out anywhere special. But I take the extra 2 mintues every morning to throw it on because as a lawyer-in-training i think i would be looked down in the professional world if i didn’t look more put together and Plus I like how the mascare brings out my blue eyes more. 😃

I do wear makeup. The extent of which you can see in my photo album pics.

The reasons I do it are personal and I put no moral imperative on either wearing or not wearing it. I have pale skin that has an uneven appearance to it, so I wear a small amount of mineral foundation to even it out so as not to draw attention to myself that way. On a daily basis I wear foundation, mascara, and lip gloss, on going out or other dressier occasions I wear more. I think it’s fun, to have red lips or a smoky eye for a night out etc. I only use makeup to attempt to highlight what is already there and to look like my better self, not to be someone else or look like someone else.

I envy women who have such great complexions that they can get away without makeup, but that’s not me, thought I try to go as natural and light handed as possible with it.

Hey that’s not old lady, I put lavender and neroli in my coconut oil too!!:thumbsup:LOVE it! That is one personal care item I would hate to on a desert island without, my coconut oil!

Funny you mention autistic kids and makeup. My 9 yr old autistic son always notices my makeup, and LOVES to watch me put it on. He actually will go get my mascara and give it to me (which is his way of telling me to out it on) because I think it makes my eyes more defined and easier for him to look at.

I go through phases. Certainly when I’m suffering zits or something I don’t feel comfortable showing them in all their glory. Same with the bags under the eyes when I’ve had little sleep.

Maybe special occasions, job interviews, client meetings and that sort of thing, might consider it daily depending on what sort of work I do (I have had multiple jobs varying in casualness).

Perfume I use more often - especially on those summer days when it’s hard to keep fresh without it. My favourite ever since it came out has been Eternity by Calvin Klein. Just haven’t found anything else I like as much. The other year I bought a different scent that I got sick of after a while, luckily it wasn’t an expensive one - and I’m now using it as bathroom deodoriser so it doesn’t go entirely to waste 😊

Having had a fair amount of years on this earth I have the makeup routine down pat and can do my face in probably three minutes. Tinted moisturer (more breathable and a lot more natural looking than foundation, although I have slightly dry skin so glugginess isn’t really an issue). Lip pencil and lipstick/lip gloss (usually a natural colour - nothing worse than having a drink and seeing bright red marks on the rim of the cup or glass). A bit of the same pencil on the eyes sometimes to open them up a bit.

Used to use mascara, but I don’t bother with it any more. Have also tried getting my eyelashes permanently tinted, which works really well for those who feel the need for mascara. But I’d advise NOT getting them tinted black, it’s too overpowering, especially if you have no other makeup on - go for brown instead.

Yes I wear make up and perfume, but only when I dress up (like for Church or for a date with dh). I think I look and smell nicer with it, but the make-up isn’t great for my complexion, so I don’t use it daily. Also, I’m usally getting dressed in a rush, so I don’t even think about make up many days. Occasionally, if I have the time, I’ll put a tiny bit on (foundation on my chin, blush on my cheeks) on an ordinary day. Even that little bit brightens me up a bit.

No, I haven’t worn make-up for about 10 years now.

Reasons:

(1) Takes too much time in the morning. This is time best spent going to Mass or praying at home.

(2) Costs money that would be best spent on other things.

(3) I don’t wear a mask emotionally or spiritually, so it doesn’t make sense to wear one physically (OK, clothing is another matter). I have nothing to hide. I want my face to be open to the world, want people I meet to see my real face, not make-up.

(4) I have controlled rosacea, but even though I’m well treated by my dermatologist, and in my opinion women who cover-up bad skin with make-up look like they’re covering up bad skin with make-up. That’s just not me.

One thing I do use is teeth whitener, which could be considered make-up of a sort. I use it because my teeth arrive in a room 5 minutes before I do (translation: I have very prominent teeth and I like to smile alot! 😃 )

🙂

I used to avoid makeup because I saw too many girls and women using it as a mask to hide behind, and just made themselves look rather scary. 😛 But through a serious of events I decided to try it, mainly because I was tired of being 20yo and looking like I was a young teenager, because of my acne and acne scars. Just a bit of foundation, and wow! It was me, but MINUS all the nasty red marks! It was still me, but without having to see the blemishes! I had never, ever, ever been able to look at my face for YEARS without zeroing in on those spots, and I could finally appreciate all the nice features of my face.
My acne has calmed down now, thanks to regular facials, using the right products, and the mineral makeup that I now use regularily. I still use a bit of foundation to smooth out the scars, and eyeshadow and blush just because it’s fun! ^^ I always try to go as ‘natural’ as possible, because I just want to look like me, except a bit better. It’s like brushing my hair; technically, the hair I wake up with is my ‘natural’ hair, but I sure don’t want to keep it looking that way! That being said, there is nothing wrong with not wearing makeup if you don’t feel the need for it, or if it’s too much bother. It’s more a matter of personal preference and what kind of skin you’re been ‘blessed’ with. 👍
