Ladies .... Please be careful with your purse

Wife and 10 year old daughter were grocery shopping tonight at the local Kroger. They were putting all the groceries in the trunk of the car, the cart was between them. In the cart was my wife’s purse in that area you normally put a little toddler, or the carton of eggs, or bread.

Guy drove up with his window rolled down, grabbed it, & took off squeeling tires. Didn’t even have to stop.

When the police came, they told us its happening all over in the grocery stores. Not only in the parking lots, but inside the stores too at the checkout lanes. And its not a bad or shady part of town … just the normal burbs.

Taught my DW a lesson tonight. Please learn from us, & don’t be the next victims!

Usual… wallet with credit cards, drivers license, cell phone, check book, address book. Spent quite a bit of time tonight calling the banks & reporting the stolen cards. She had the spare set of car keys in her purse … so we’re parking the cars in the garage from now on.

She only had a few dollars of cash in there, so we’re lucky. And when I think about it, it could have been so much worse. Just before the holidays was a local news report of a woman killed in another part of town while filling her gas tank - killed for her purse.

Police told us tonight Houston has recently become the highest crime city in the nation, bar none. 😦
 
Now on a brighter note, was the other shoppers in the parking lot.

Right when it happened, my daughter yelled, “MOMMY, HE TOOK YOUR PURSE!”

My wife started screaming and yelling “HEY HE STOLE MY PURSE”

A woman and another man ran over from different directions, making sure they were ok. They offered a cell phone to call the police. Another man, who was nearby & pulling out of the lot, drove over & asked what color car - where? They pointed, he took off after them. Later came back telling her he was too late & couldn’t get the plate though.

Some very good samiritans.
 
Yeah, I dont’ trust anyone. I NEVER put my purse in the buggy, NEVER. I feel like that’s just asking for trouble. I’m one of those folks who lock their cars to go in and pay for gas and I won’t leave my purse in the car then either. If I take just my wallet, I will hide my purse.

I recently went to a self defense class for women and I learned something interesting that I hadn’t heard before. They said if you have an automatic door unlocker on your keychain, don’t press the button until you are very close to the car. They said bad guys walk parking lots and parking decks and when they hear that “beep beep” they will turn and walk toward the noise to see what they can steal or if they can kidnap you. The reason you are suppose to wait until you are close to the car to hit the unlock button is so you will have more of a chance of getting in your car and driving away before the bad guy has a chance to find the beeping car.
 
I don’t even carry a purse. I have a keychain with a carbiner, and I can hook my very small wallet (with license, cards and any neccessary cash) to it and then hook it to my jeans (or put it deep in a coat pocket). My cell phone goes in my other jean pocket. Done.

I am still trying to figure out what-all my mom carried around in her ever-present purse. :confused:
 
my purse is always snapped and zipped, and held firmly with shoulder strap over me and clasped under my arm. If I do put it in the cart, it is strapped in with the baby strap. when I unlock my car I put my purse on the floor first, then unload my cart. If I have to walk away to stow the cart, I lock my car. My keys are in my pocket, not my purse.

I cringe to see purses in untended carts all over the store with the zipper open, wallets and envelopes of cash clearly visible. I cringe even more to see kids in the untended carts and usually stand nearby until parent returns.

Backing up my truck at walmart one day, I saw a cart with a child in it roll away from parents car while they were re-arrangeing stuff in the trunk. it was head straight for me so I stopped blocking the lane, so no one else could hit him, and honked but parents just stared, went on with what they were doing. Walmart security came by and I let him handle it. hope the parents were arrested.

at gas stations I pay at pump, lock my car while I am filling up, keep keys and credit card in my pocket. I have had to sound car alarm once from my keyring when somebody approached my car and tried to open the passenger door, but it was my screaming that attracted help. and I can scream ask my kids

when I am driving, my purse has the seatbelt passed thru the straps. I’m from Detroit. If I am hit I never stop and never get out, keep driving straight to police station or gas station, or honk at first police car I see.
 
I don’t leave my purse in the cart without hanging onto the handles. Will even put it in the car and lock it in if I have a lot of groceries to unload.

As for what one carries in the purse - besides wallet and keys, a pocket size hand lotion, lip balm, paper and pens, a packet of gum, a stack of business cards, my Magnificat, a rosary and sometimes a current Avon brochure. If with my husband some of his stuff too!

I always put my purse in the bottom of the main part of the cart while i am shopping so that the food is on top of it. I also never leave my cart unattended- since I have kids it’s a must! After I pay I put it over my shoulder and it stays there until I get to the car. Purse goes in first, then kids, then groceries. If I have to walk away to put the cart away after I unload, I always lock the car. I always park close to the cart thingie, too, so I don’t have to walk farther than I can see my car (since my kids are in it!)

I had/have somewhat paranoid parents- but we also lived internationally (military) and we were always taught how to watch our surroundings and protect ourselves. Thanks, Mom!

Exactly. I never let go of my purse in stores. I don’t even let my keys out of my sight- those go in my pocket. I don’t normally carry enough cash to pay for a full tank of gas, so I pay at the pump, but only my keys and the card come out of the car with me. I’m a student so I often have my backpack, but that usually goes under a seat or in the trunk if I have to stop at a store or something.
 
Thanks for the information… I have the worst habit of just leaving my purse in the cart while I am putting children and groceries in the car… I gotta remember to be more careful now! WOW that’s unbelievable, I shop at Krogers all the time… 😦 Scary!!! I am sorry to hear about your wife’s experience, I hope all is well!

Wow, I didn’t know there were still people who went into the store to pay for gas, LOL.

My wife leaves her’s in the car all the time. In plain view. I’m done yelling at her, except the “I told you so” which will be coming when the car gets broken into.

I never knew people took such security steps, I guess I’m just kinda oblivious to it all myself…this thread is an interesting read.
 
We had a rash of these type of thefts in my college town. Ladies would leave their purses in the buggy while grabbing groceries off the shelf…the thief would sneak right up and help himself to the purse! 😦

One of the oldest tricks in the book…I thought this was well known to people but I see purses in baby seats of the cart all the time??? I don’t understand…🤷 :confused: I can’t understand why people aren’t more careful, the grocery store is a public place like any other, and I can’t imagine leaving my personal belongings unattended, let alone my wallet etc:eek:

I usually just leave my purse at home so I don’t have to lug it. I have a little card keeper for my debit card and my DL, and have them in an inside picket of my jacket zipped up. Having my hands free is a must with 3 kids in tow, one of whom is a runner. On the odd occasion I do have my purse with me, I keep it across me at all times, or use my wristlet in place of my ‘regular’ purse.

If you have had your identity stolen just ONCE, you will never ever ever ever leave your wallet and info unsecured for even a second. I’ve had it happen once, and my sister 3 TIMES!!, and let me tell you, it’s a hassle you don’t want to deal with.

This happens all over them place too, not just in urban or suburban areas…when my purse and identity were stolen I lived in a town with under 200 people.
 
I keep my purse on me at all times, ie, with the shoulder strap over one shoulder and hanging angled across my torso, Sam Browne belt-style. Never take it off, unless I’m at home or I’m stowing it in the office at work.

As to what’s in it besides my wallet and keys? Cellphone, first aid kit, coin purse, rosary case, lip balm, smelling salts (I faint easily), pill box with Benedryl (in case of allergic reactions), clip on sunglasses, feminine items, small notebook and pen, and occasionally my Magnificat.
 
I carry a big purse, when it’s in the shopping cart seat I wrap the strap around my wrist. When I have to leave my cart to grab something it comes with me. When I unload groceries I first throw it in the trunk out of sight.

My mom had this happen inside a Wal-mart. Soon as she saw her purse was gone she went running (and yelling -she’s Italian) to the front door. They locked down the whole store -nobody could get in or out. An employee found her purse thrown in an aisle with everything still in it -luckily.

I work retail and see purses unattended all the time. Like the customer is in another aisle. And we’ve had a couple of purses snatched. They come to customer service very angry. Worse though is how many infants and small children I’ve seen left in another aisle in the cart. Some people take their purse but leave their children unattended. Makes you wonder.
 
I have a regular customer at work who puts her purse in the little kid-seat of her shopping cart, but she loops the little seat belt added to the cart, through the strap of her purse and fastens the seat belt. Clever tactic!

When I go in the store, I don’t open my purse except to take out cash or debit card. When I go to the car, I put in the girls and my purse, lock the door, go behind to the tailgate, unlock that, and THEN put away my groceries.

I always cringe when I see women walking around with purses on long, skinny straps. I carry very small purses on very short straps, so I’m either carrying the purse in hand as a clutch, or if it’s over my shoulder, it’s tucked right under and held in place by my arm. Like I said, I don’t carry much cash- I have a small card holder (goes in my back pocket when I’m in lab) that holds my DL, student ID, debit card, and insurance cards. I never carry my checkbook around- that’s only used to pay bills so I keep that at home in the bill basket. I don’t reapply makeup other than lipstick so that’s the only makeup in my purse. Otherwise, I have a rosary, some store rewards cards, my cell phone, tampons, and lactase pills. No need for other stuff. 🤷
 
I carry mine like a football and I’m running for a long pass, under my (yes, women have them,too) armpit. :o When I’m in Texas, people try to tell me that I’m being paranoid, but I’ve never had my purse nabbed. And as Light Seeker is in Texas, I now feel justified for walking around like a linebacker all this time.
