This is what Paul is quoted as saying about the song;
PAUL 1986: “‘Lady Madonna’ is all women. How do they do it? --bless 'em. Baby at your breast, how do they get the time to feed them? Where do they get the money? How do you do this thing that women do?”
PAUL circa-1994: "The original concept was the Virgin Mary, but it quickly became symbolic of every woman-- the Madonna image but as applied to ordinary working-class women.
I don’t see anything immoral about thier concept nor the lryics.
Mary is a very good role model for women with the juggling of thier responsiblities in everyday life. And we men, should look upon women as if anyone of them could have been chosen for the role Mary was chosen for and accepted and give them proper respect for that possibility.
Except for the one line about “Sunday morning creeping like a nun”, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Agree with the above poster’s explanation, in that it’s (mostly) a song that actually praises motherhood and the sacrifices mothers make.
Off-topic, I love the bah-buh-bah vocal section on the bridge - nice “retro” effect!
