Hi everyone, so I was praying the rosary today and said a prayer to the Lady of Guadalupe for my unborn child. I also asked the Lady of Fatima to help me convert my husband. Also, when I was getting my haircut, the little Vietnamese lady who cuts my hair gave me a prayer card for the Lady of La Vang, which is also Mary. I am just wondering since these are all Mary, does it matter which “version” of her you pray to? Are the different “versions” or are they all Mary just in different forms? I am genuinely confused, and not trying to be cynical or disrespectful. Why pray to the Lady of Guadalupe specifically for a baby, when you could just pray to the virgin Mary? I will continue to do so, but wondering if anyone has any answers? (Hopefully I am making sense too. I’m running on five hours of sleep and have a very active baby playing the xylophone with my ribs

Well, you can just pray to Jesus, but there are prayers to Baby Jesus, Jesus on the Cross, Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus as Judge at the end of the world, etc.

Calling on Mary under her various titles is partly a nice courtesy (“Hey, thanks for coming to La Vang and helping support Jesus’ Gospel! I really get a lot of help when I think about that appearance of yours!”) and partly is just fun and fitting and interesting.

If you love someone and you have a poetic turn of mind, you will probably have a zillion different nicknames and compliments and injokes for the ones you love. Heck, even people’s dogs have tons of different nicknames (although the dog is only going to answer to one, he will probably figure out that you’re talking about him with the other names). So it’s natural that Mary, one of the most popular and beloved women in history, has about as many names as we can possibly pile on her.

When Mary appears somewhere, she’s making a point on behalf of her Son. But it also allows people in that area to feel that she’s specially theirs and loves them particularly. She’s their hometown girl. So a lot of people have special pride in the apparition particular to their area, or the statue or painting of Mary that is locally associated with healings and miracles, or similar stuff. People love Jesus, but they like to love Him personally. The same thing is true of our brothers and sisters, the saints. What is closer to us tends to be closer to our hearts, and we are more impressed by what we know by personal experience.

So basically, localizing Mary by a particular title or appearance is helpful to a lot of people. If it’s not helpful to you, you don’t have to do it; but you shouldn’t be scandalized by something that’s been pretty normal throughout the history of the Church.

And your neighbors around town sound like really nice people!

I understand she has different names, I guess what I am wondering is does she respond to certai prayers better if you use a certain identity? I know it seems silly and Im not sure if I am being very clear haha.

I think that prayer with sincerity and perseverance is what’s heard. There’s no rules on how to do it.

Personally, I like knowing which titles of Mary or which patron saints are associated with what ailments or problems, and I like telling that info to people. Why? Because I like categories and memorization. It helps me have confidence, because I’m just that kind of person.

However, there’s also a long tradition of just having your local popular saint or your particular patron saint get bugged with everything. That’s why a lot of saints have such long lists of patronages, in fact!

So I would say that you should pray in whatever way you naturally express yourself and whatever way you find fitting. Don’t worry about the how. Private devotions and prayers are just that - private. It’s between you and Christ, and whoever you want to address in the Church in Heaven.

Mary is Mary. We are allowed to believe in varied appearances of the Virgin Mother of God but this belief is not necessary for our salvation. I think if we are confused at the varied apparitions we should study their coherent and unifying message of repentance and return to Christ rather then the geography or characters involved. However, if you study approved interactions with Mary such as Guadalupe, Fatima, Lourdes you can see the will of God to raise Mary to this function of intercession with mankind, which should assure us of the value of prayer through her to our Saviour. I just pray to Mary. My mom prayed to St. Gerard Majella. They all get to God. May you have a graceful pregnancy and a bouncing healthy baby.
