I just posted those after a quick GOOGLE search. I get the impression, after reading the sites, that it started with Leonardo di Vinci’s painting “The Virgin of the Rocks”. As such, it may not be a formal devotion of the Church. This has not stopped at least one Church and one Monastery being built to honor the name of “Our Lady of the Rock”.

Ummm… I don’t know.

I did a google search too, and am none the wiser. Da Vinci’s painting sounds the most likely, but I thought he had to be painting an already existent devotion, since the painting was ordered by a monastery?

I’ll give you the context: T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land has Her mentioned briefly, but She would seem to be important as another instance in the poem of dry rock giving the water of life…

Did Leonardo give the work the title of the Virgin of the Rocks, or was this title merely attached to the work?
