Priests and clergy stood united during the Chrism Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland, last night as St Andrews and Edinburgh archdiocesan clergy renewed their priestly commitment following Cardinal Keith O’Brien’s resignation.
Archbishop Philip Tartaglia of Glasgow, president of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland and Apostolic administrator for St Andrews and Edinburgh, told those gathered for the annual Chrism Mass that Pope Francis would guide Scottish Catholics through these difficult times and that they must not give up hope. He asked the laity to stand with the priests as they renewed their commitment.
Cardinal O’Brien’s request for early retirement was accepted a few weeks before his 75 birthday this month. He faces an investigation following his admission that his sexual conduct fell below that expected of him.
