Indeed - and “East Indian” is also a reference to a Catholic minority centered in Mumbai. It’s not a perfect compromise for getting around confusing the ethnicity for First Nations people, but it’s the best I’ve seen. What would you suggest calling people from India so as not to confuse them with American Indians?
 
Yes, the terminology is problematic and confusing. I’ve heard that American Indian is preferable to Native American but that indigenous people is fine as well. I must admit that “First Nations” is a new one for me. However, given the deplorable state of this and other reservations, including poverty, disease, alcoholism, and so on, the label, I think, is the least of the First Nations’ problems.
 
I think context would usually be enough. If not, a few words of clarification could end the confusion.
