Here in South Alabama, we co-exist with many Protestant denominations the preponderance of which is Baptists. However, according to many of my Baptist friends, there appears to be an upsurge in something called the Landmark Baptists. According to the info I can find, they claim apostolic succession back to John the Baptist and have something like a Calvinist theology. There seems to be a fear that this theology is beginning to creep into other Baptist denominations, or so I am being told. Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks,

Landmarkism started in the 1800’s. It originated in Tennessee and Kentucky and was primarily generated by James R. Graves, Amos C. Dayton, and James M. Pendleton, often called the “Nashville triumvirate,” who shaped and disseminated Landmarkism’s divisive doctrine, which was outlined in the “Cotton Grove Resolutions” of June 1851. It was created to assert a historicity to the Baptist movement. As such Landmarkist believe that only Baptist Churches adhering to Landmarkist ideology have valid ordination and baptism.

The alleged connection of the few hundred years Baptists with John the Baptist is apparently because he is incorrectly labeled in English. He has been renamed far more accuratelly as St John the Baptizer.

What part South Alabama? Grew up there. Sounds more like either end: Theodore or Foley.
