Hi,
I have been recently going over my religious upbringing in my own mind and know that I am ready to come home to the church. I am a cradle Catholic. The beliefs I was taught are still instilled in me. We have one church here that does a Mass in Latin and it is just beautiful. I feel the Holy Spirit throughout the entire Mass. I know I was maybe 4 when they stopped saying the Mass in Latin. At this mass, I saw a few older women wearing what looks like a doily on top their heads. I remember having to wear this. It was white and it would hold up there with a bobby pin. I know they are not called doilies because we had a specific name for them and I cannot remember it. I also had a longer one I wore and I believe that is called a mantilla. Please correct me if I am wrong here. I was looking at these ladies and remembering how we had to wear one of those on our heads, etc. and I felt kind of sad that it is no longer so. I just felt it showed a bit more respect for the Church and God. I was trying to find one online and, since I do not know the name of them, I can’t. So, if anyone out there can tell me what they are called, I would appreciate it.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to say, Welcome back home! 🙂

the round cap-like veils were part of our school uniform in those days, and labelled “chapel veils” and came in a plastic case. A mantilla is a long veil that touches the shoulders. There was also a style of hat in the early 60s, when beehive hairdos where in fashion, that was a mesh (not lace) type of cap or hat, sometimes decorated with bows, and that was the preferred Sunday had in my early HS years.

Have not seen anything authoratative on whether or not women will be required to wear head coverings in places where TLM is restored. Having visited 3 churches this summer for TLM, was very surprised to see there is no uniformity. Veils are available for purchase, but there was no “enforcement” and at least half the women wore no head covering. Several did wear hats, and some veils. All 3 did have prominent announcements about proper, modest attire however, although we did see some slacks on women, but anyone with bare shoulders was asked to put on a shirt or sweater.

I have to ask, what is TLM? And why is it being restored? Wow, they have veils for purchase but no one wears them? That is odd. I am surprised someone went into church with bare shoulders. There are many pretty dresses made like that but they usually come with a light sweater or such to wear over the strapless or strap area.

Thank you for telling me the name. I knew we called them something specific but I could not remember what it was.

I heard a show on Catholic answers live sometime back and they discussed this.

There is no rule on them one way or the other, although if you feel like wearing one no one should have anything to say about it.

That’s essentially what they told the lady that called.

Welcome home! I’m a re-vert too. 😃

I have a story about it. CAF Testimony

That stands for Traditional Latin Mass.
And why is it being restored?
His Holiness just released a Motu Propio document on allowing the old missal to be more widely used because some people really like it. I guess it depends on how good your Latin is. I’ve never been, but it doesn’t bother me either way.

Guess it depends on where you live…The truth is, I’m glad to see people at Mass regardless what they wear. if it’s marginal, I just remember them in my prayers.

Yep…your friendly neighborhood Mantilla. 🙂

BTW, you’ll find much discussion of that and other traditional topics up in the Traditional Catholicism forum.

TLM = Traditional Latin Mass or the Tridentine Mass or the Mass according to the 1962 Missal.

And while it was never abrogated it has hardly been “widely” available since the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Hopefully Papae Benedicti motu proprio entitled Summorum Pontificum will allow it to be widely available again without negating the Novus Ordo. Hopefully everyone will once again be able to enjoy the beauty of the traditional liturgy.

Thank you! I feel I will find many answers here and the comfort I have known the church to bring me when I was an active/practicing Catholic.

I did see some women wearing hats and I thought it looked rather nice. I also remember the old ‘hat clips’ that were in the pews to hang up on the men’s hats. I am sure that by the time I was around 5 or 6, I wasn’t wearing one anymore (still can’t think of what we called them).

Thank you for the welcome! I had barely joined the forum and I was getting responses to my post. 🙂 That made me feel as though I had truly found the exact place I need to be for questions, comfort, and prayer.
