My apologies in-advance for this lengthy post…
I am a 28 year old husband and father. My wife is a wonderful woman and an atheist, my son is less than two months old.
I was born and raised Catholic. I attended a Catholic school, went to mass every week as a teenager. However, as I went through high school, I grew unsatisfied with my faith.
After confirmation, this separation manifested into a decade-long journey away from Catholicism. There were many factors that contributed to this end. Growing up in the Boston Archdiocese in the early '00s, the abuse scandal and the horrifically bureaucratic cover-up were omnipresent. Simultaneously, my developing personal views on many issues seemed to contrast sharply with those of the Church (in particular, I saw the Church eschewing issues of social justice for other more headline-grabbing topics as a major concern).
My freshman year of college I met my future wife. In short time we knew we were in love and spent the next seven years engaged. We celebrated our three-year wedding anniversary a week after my son was born.
In that time, I’ve never stopped considering myself a Catholic despite having failed to attend services in a decade. I’ve questioned my faith deeply, I’ve questioned the existence of God, I’ve explored agnosticism but when it comes down to it, I still feel RC to my core. It’s taken me years, but I believe I’m ready to try again. I believe that’s God’s intent for me.
Yet, despite my desire to return to the Church, I’m not certain of this path because:
So, my questions are: Will my opinions and commitment to my wife create hurdles too difficult to consider this? Is returning to the Church (at this time) a folly given my current state? If you believe returning to the faith is in my (and my family’s) best interests, how would you go about getting it underway?
Thanks in-advance and God Bless.

Yet, despite my desire to return to the Church, I’m not certain of this path because:
- I do not feel any less dedicated to political/social views that many would consider antithetical to life as a Catholic (I firmly support LGBT rights, no prayer in public schools and sex education beyond ‘abstinence only’, among others).
- I am completely committed to sharing the joys and responsibilities of parenthood with my wife - including decisions of faith. While she has never suggested that raising our children Catholic is in any way abhorrent to her sensibilities, I do not doubt that she will also educate them on her own beliefs.
So, my questions are: Will my opinions and commitment to my wife create hurdles too difficult to consider this? Is returning to the Church (at this time) a folly given my current state?
