I had a random thought: what would be the largest possible tabernacle? Would it be licit for a priest to build a freestanding room inside his parish, gold leaf the walls/ceiling/floor inside and out, and use it as a tabernacle? If so, would it be an abuse to walk inside or to put the Blessed Sacrament on the “floor?”

The Eucharist is reserved in the tabernacle for the sick, dying, and adoration. I don’t think there’s any guidline for tabernacle size, but for the reasons it’s reserved, your idea doesn’t seem to be feasible or proper.

I’m certainly open to being corrected on this

I think we wouldn’t want to walk into a tabernacle Maybe kneel down at the door and push the Blessed Sacrament in? 😇 You’d need really long arms though… Probably should crawl in, prostrate, crawl backwards out. Would be really challenging in a cassock/alb/chasuble combo. Especially as you would have to crawl in one handed as you held the Blessed Sacrament aloft. Frankly I think it would call for a whole new type of vestments.

Question if no one ever walks on it is it still truly a floor? If a floor is defined as the bottom surface of a space, the ciboria will always be on the floor of whatever tabernacle they occupy unless we find a way to have them hover.

If the room itself hovered it would be even better although more challenging to crawl in and out of

There is no specified size limit for a tabernacle in a manual. If somebody wanted to build a gigantoid-sized one it would probably elicit a bertstare.jpeg from the bishop.

Also, communion can only be given to laity for specific purposes, such as delivering it to the homebound directly after leaving the parish. Having Hosts laying around for people to grab in a walk-in tabernacle would be the equivalent to having a tabernacle with the door hanging open instead of lock & keyed, which isn’t permitted.
