Tonight (Friday) CNN at 9 pm EDT, They will talk about (debate?) Hawking’s new book in which he claims God was not necessary for creation–gravity did it. (And, might I ask, where did gravity come from?)

Space curvature: where else?

Darnnit. Having Chopra on there totally discredits the other side, no matter how reasoned. Darnnit, darnnit, darnnit.

And whose other side will Chopra be on? Fr. Spitzer’s or Hawking’s? I think Chopra will be on his own side–it’ll be a tripartite contest, and Chopra will be way out in left field, with some mystical (and totally wrong) interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Chopra may very well be the guy in the middle, not really committing to either “side,” but it’s a loss either way for “our side.” Why? He’s spiritual babbling will only taint what Fr. Spitzer has to say. He just needs to let the big boys talk with this one and save his guru stuff for another day.

From nothing comes nothing. "nuff said. Man, if I said my University was created by absolutely nothing, I’d be laughed at, but saying that the universe was created by nothing seems to be logical to some people

Unfortunately, Father Spitzer could barely get a word in.

We are living in dangerous times though. Our scientists have become metaphysicians, and they do not even understand their presuppositions well enough to know they are doing so.

These are the brightest minds of today? Verily I say, “truths are decayed from among the children of men.”

Untrue. As Leonard said on the interview, “nothing is unstable”. Particles pop in and out of existence on a regular basis. Physics now explains the creation of the universe in the same way. Though thats really simplifying it.

Particles pop in and out of existence only presupposing certain material conditions. Thus, they are efficiently caused.

When Hawking writes popular books he tends to mix proven theory with his own speculations. The idea of spontaneous quantum creation of the universe has been around for decades, but it has never explained the origin of physics itself beyond various unfalsifiable speculations. Do you know whether Hawking has solved that glitch, or has he finally decided it’s turtles all the way down, or is he just whipping up controversy to sell his new book?

heh. Brief History of Time / Stephen Hawkings Universe.

I do not know yet. i’m only on the 4th chapter of his book so far. Should be done about Tuesday if homework allows >_>

Though i have followed Hawking’s theories since i was in Junior high and i first heard his name. Hes kinda a personal hero to me. I doubt he is “whipping up controversy” as i believe he and his family are more than taken care of. If he says something this impactful, then i believe 100% that he believes it to be true.

Fr. Spitzer’s intelligence is nowhere near on the same level as Mr. Hawking. Not many people are on the same level as Hawking. What a waste of time even having Spitzer on the show when there is no way he could even comprehend Hawking’s most basic ideas and thoughts!

For my purposes, Father Spitzer made an extremely important reference. I am curious if anyone else caught important references besides nothing comes from nothing idea.

It was very obvious that Larry King steered the conversation away from Hawking’s physics. In fact, evaluating King’s initial comments, he did not really know who Father Spitzer was.
