At a Solemn High Mass, is the Last Gospel chanted, spoken audibly, or spoken inaudibly?
 
Keep in mind that the Last Gospel, as well as the prayers at the foot of the altar (Introibo, etc), were originally sacrity devotions, said before and after mass.

Does it not explain - at least in part - why the Last Gospel is not sung? When these prayers were said in the sacristy, were certainly not sung!
