If on the battlefield a dying Jewish soldier requested the Last Sacrament of a Catholic priest, could and would the priest comply?

Why not? The Jew would have to be baptized first. Isn’t that what we call a deathbed conversion?

Catholic chaplains in hospitals are all taught to say the “Shema Yisrael” – Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is One in Hebrew. They whisper it in the ear of the dying so that it is the last thing the Jew hears in life.

Of course the priest would Baptize him, Confirm, give Holy Communion, Anointing of the Sick, Apostolic blessing in that order.

That’s pretty cool.

I’m reminded of the stories during WWII when Jewish and Protestant soldiers heading for combat wanted to partake in sacramental confession and holy communion like their Catholic brothers…

Why not whisper the Apostles creed? That would be of infinitely greater benefit to their immortal souls.

because Catholic chaplains, like God, are respecters of free will and would not impose Christian belief on a Jew without his consent and request. That battlefield conversion would only be with full consent as well.

Sorry. Didn’t make myself clear. They do that for Jews when a Jewish chaplain is unavailable.

A soul is about to meet Almighty God in judgement, they are slipping into unconsciousness, and you want them to sign a consent form, after a course of instruction, if they don’t mind, thank you, sir. Get real. We try to bring Christ to souls, we don’t organise leaflet campaigns while working for a consensus.

So… maybe I need to start a new thread… but my great-grandma(!!) is nearing death, and I think that (from our conversations) she may want to recieve reconciliation and the last sacrament… but she’s Baptist…

What would she have to do to become a Catholic? Sh’es very old, and is aware and pretty sharp, but can’t read very well and can’t really remember alot of doctrine etc. and is confined to bed.
