but since HE [Dan Brown] WRITES FICTION, the ideas don’t really bother me all that much.
How can a fiction book be heresy?
That is the very essence of the problem. It is fiction masqueraded as FACT.

Simpler folk with little or no knowledge are taken in by the evil deception.

Angels and Demons is a willful and deliberate conspiracy to defame the authority of Christ in the successor of St Peter. It is a slur not only against his Holiness but against every Pope including the Blessed Apostle.

That is to be taken very seriously. It is evil heaped upon evil

Wow-how quicky I have fallen-a few posts back I was “perfect” Now I am “simpler folk” Man I feel like Yo Yo

I am looking at my copy of Angels and Demon’s and in my book it says

“THIS BOOK IS A WORK OF FICTION.NAMES, CHARACTERS, AND INCIDENTS ARE PRODUCTS OF THE AUTHOR’S IMAGINATION OR ARE USED FICTITIOUSLY…”

Now on his first page he does put an author’s note saying that references to all the tombs, art tunnels and so on in rome are real. As are the Illuminati.

Is the Illuminati real, yes proably. But does that mean the whole book is real? To me this is akin to does London exist in the Harry Potter series, yes of course. But I would be hard pressed to find anyone in London who could find 9 3/4 platform at the railroad station:)

Again we are giving Dan Brown much more credence than he deserves. It’s not as if he is theologian writing a book and it is filled with untruths. Its FICTION.

As a writer myself, I am responsible for what I write and most of what I write is fiction. When a book by Dan Brown is made into a movie, the ideas contained therein get a wider audience. Some impressionable people may see this movie and get confused about what is true or not.

When I write, I realize that a broad spectrum of people will read it, some very educated and others not so. I will be called to account for myself at the last judgement. I want to see to it that I do not cause my brother to stumble. This is my concern as a Catholic.

God bless,
Ed

This embodies the clever deception. It is claimed to be fiction but then it goes on to expound an alternative version of the bible which folk think is startling revelation, which explains why some then argue ‘See, sex is normal, even Jesus had sex, we know for a fact He made love to Mary Magdalen, the Catholic Church presents HIm as a virgin because that is what they want you to believe, but you should go and see the flim!’

Again: ‘Dan Brown is brilliant, he has blown the lid off the Catholic Church, Jesus and Mary Magdalen had a baby. Lets see the Catholic Church try to wriggle out of that one!’

Again, ‘They were able to suppress it, but an independent researcher who has left no stone unturned to find out the truth, has blown the truth wide open!’

Those are the sorts of comments circulating Britain about theDa Vinci hoax

which is why some of us receive emails from alarmed and disturbed Christians who have as a result lost their faith!

I am confused, what is there in the book “Angels and demons” that is a false teaching?

I am not talking about his other books, just this one.

I think that it was a good book, very exciting, and also, when it is made into a movie it will expose the fact that St. Peter’s tomb is underneath St. Peter’s Basilica, something that many non-catholics don’t know, or they deny.
This could put it in the mind of the viewers of the movie that the Church’s claim that Peter was the first pope might have some validity.

I find it amusing that some people here could probably find anti-Catholicism in an episode of Sesame Street and whine about it, while on the same Boards madly bashing Protestants, Mormons, Moslems, SDA’s, liberals, and other Catholics.
I’m dying over here. So true.

And Bob, I know we generally try to rip each other’s throats right out (with a couple of recent exceptions) but please, don’t ever change. Unless it’s to see things my way 👍

If Dan Brown is blaspheming, he should be sacked, and thats that. Why doenent the Pope do something about it?

Sack him form what? I dont think he works for the Pope. OTH I got a certified letter form the Pope this weekend and I am afraid to open it. Think he reads CAF?

Rip out ecah other throats? I am just trying gently to show you the error of your ways!😃

Now wait a minute–I thought all that stuff about the Vatican keeping records on all of us and having secret police to silence troublemakers was just Jack T. Chick fiction. Are you saying that Mr. Chick is RIGHT?!

Seriouly, edwest2, I appreciate your zeal in condemning entertainment that isn’t Christian. I think we all entertain ourselves with stuff that hurts our soul.

But are you saying that something has to be overtly Christian to be acceptable entertainment? E.g., I love figure skating. Is it wrong for me to watch this sport unless a skater/team is doing a program to Christian music?

Another example: I love Sherlock Holmes fiction, both movies and literature. But as you know, A.C. Doyle was a spiritualist, and elements of this lack of belief in Christianity occasionally show up in the tales of Holmes and Watson. Should I not be reading about or watching movies about my favorite fictional guy?

Another question for edwest2. You write fiction. So do I. So how does your stuff sell compared to DVC and A&D? I’ll be honest, even though it hurts. My books have a decidedly Catholic bent to them, and not one thing that would be offensive to Christians. The Catholics who have read them write me back and say that they’re great. But my novel sales are nowhere near Dan Brown’s. Are yours? Why don’t people buy millions of our books? (If you plan on answering this, be nice! I suspect that the reason my novels don’t outsell Dan Brown’s is that he is probably a better writer than me, and since many knowledgeable critics say that Dan Brown is a terrible writer, then I must be a horribly terrible writer! :crying: )

Excuse me chaps but I do feel that this is all rather getting away from the point of the thread that the director of the Da Vinci Code hoax is committed to making sure that his next project ‘Angels and Demons’ is an unqualified success. That he intends to do this by emphasising those parts of the Dan Brown fiction which is masquraded as fact. Those ‘facts’ are likely to bring the Vatican and his Holiness into disrepute.

I find the apologetics for Dan Brown grossely offensive, particularly as the Da Vinci Code is blasphemous. But if Catholics think it is ok to ‘stand shoulder to shoulder’ with blasphemy, against the Catholic Church, then on your soul be it.

On the question of the alleged Vatican Police, I do not find your comments in the least helpful. Just because the rest of the world are ganging up on his Holiness, it is a lame excuse for Catholics to do likewise…unless of course, you are covert Dan Brown sympathisers masquerading as Catholics.

Oh my-now we have been condemned to hell for not agreeing with your take on a book. I guess i would be grossly offended except for the fact i didnt find this whole thread ridicolous.

I guess that is hardly surprising. CAF are alarmed at the promotion of the film Angels and Demons but then again who the are they? Only the promoters of this forum to which you are privildged to post.

I find it amazing that in another thread, an organisation which promotes Christian Ideals and the Nicene Creed, is condemned as apostacy while here allegedly good Catholics are promoting and defending blasphemy.

Me thinks that it ridiculous

Could you and CAF perhpaps put togehter a list of “banned books”. it would be very helpful for those of us who arent as preceptive as you.

My dear estibob, better than that, perhaps you could tell me which of the following I am over-reacting to from that which you have described as an entertaining book:

Jesus is not God. He was only a man.
  • Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene.
  • Mary Magdalene is to be worshiped as a goddess.
  • Jesus got Mary Magdalene pregnant, and the two had a daughter.
  • That daughter gave rise to a prominent family line that is still present in Europe today.
  • The Bible was put together by a pagan Roman emperor.
  • Jesus was viewed as a man and not as God until the fourth century, when he was deified by the Emperor Constantine.
  • The Gospels have been edited to support the claims of later Christians.
  • In the original Gospels, Mary Magdalene rather than Peter was directed to establish the Church.
  • There is a secret society known as the Priory of Sion that still worships Mary Magdalene as a goddess, and this group is trying to keep the truth alive.
  • The Catholic Church is aware of all this and has been fighting for centuries to keep it suppressed and often has committed murder to do so.
  • The Catholic Church is willing to and often has assassinated the descendents of Christ to keep his bloodline from growing too large.
Everyone knows Christ is not a god, He was not worshipped as such until the 4th century when he was deified.

He was deified to support the pagan Roman Empire who needed a religion to support and reinforce their ideology. So Catholicism was born.

The founding father of the Catholic Church was not Christ but Emporor Constantine.

The teachings of Christ are mythical. The greatest of which is the Blessed Sacrament myth.

We do not have any access to true teachings of Christ as the Gospels were refabricated to fit the new needs of the pagan Roman Empire.

Advocates and the new sects that have arisen from the Da Vinci Code have added

The first Pope was a pagan Roman Emporor. Pope St Constantine.

The office of Pope is really the office of the old pagan Roman Emporor.

Elsewhere in Browns writings, Christ is depicted as the son of a carpenter of Nazereth who was otherwise known as the village idiot!!

Please tell me which of the above is light hearted entertainment. Perhaps I am over- emotional with outrage. Perhaps I have lost the plot!!!

Thanks Sixtus. Apparently some neo-cons and liberals still choose to be blind.

I have read the book, and I rather enjoyed it.
I didn’t see where it was as offensive as the Da Vinci Code.
It is where a Priest (or cardinal, I can’t remember) tries to accent to the papacy through murder and deceit.
But I didn’t think that it was trying to push forward a heresy like the Da Vinci Code did.
To me it was just a good murder mystery.

I can see where any attack on the church could be seen as evil, but I did not see this book attacking the teachings of the church, or the fundamentals of Christianity.
