I am going to try again to get an answer to a question that has plagued me about this whole situation.
It is not my intent to bash, I sincerely want to understand the SSPX position, because quite honestly, it baffles me. :o

I know little of the SSPX as they are not active in my diocese. We do have, and have had for at least 15 years that I know of, a weekly EF, @ 1pm on Sunday in one of the most beautiful churches in our diocese.
I have attended a few of times over the years and have found that the EF is not for me, but I respect the feelings of those who prefer it, and I am glad that the Holy Father has liberalized it’s use for those who want it.

My understanding of the SSPX situation is that it really all boils down to AB Lefevrbe consecrating 4 Bishops without the approval of the Holy Father.
I understand that he (the AB) believed that he was acting correctly because he believed the Church to be in “grave danger”. I understand that he was acting out of what his conscience was telling him to do and what he believed to be the right thing.

However, “the Boss” said “NO”! The AB did it anyway.

My understanding is that the AB said it was because he was upholding the Tradition of the Church.
I understand that that is what he believed, but isn’t also Tradition that the Pope has the final word? 🤷

How do they (the SSPX) and those who sympathize with them, justify this act of willful disobedience, that at it’s very core is the antithesis of Traditional?

And, again, I am not trying to bash anyone or the SSPX, I am merely trying to understand.
As they say its always best to go to the source. If you want to know their views ask them, by which I mean read their website i.e sspx.org, or literature, the sspx asia district website has a ton of it available for free including several whole books. Then you can make an informed judgement.

It is a very puzzling inconsistancy in their reasoning, isn’t it? I mean every good Catholic knows that the Pope and the Magisterium of the Church are the final word on all things Catholic.

I have done that.
What I have found there scares me even more as to what their intentions are. 😦
I guess that there just is not an answer…

I believe you have answered your own question.
II understand that he (the AB) believed that he was acting correctly because he believed the Church to be in “grave danger”. .
We must also obey God’s commandments. One of them is obey your parents. But, if your parents asked you to do something that will place you near an occasion of sin, you are obliged to disobey. The same principle applies.

Catholic Doctrine has always taught, since the very first days of the Church, down through it’s looooong Tradition, with a capital T, that the Pope is the final authority, and “no one may judge the Pope,” because no one on this earth is higher than the Pope. The Pope is protected from error on these matters, infallibly, by the guidance and grace of the Holy Ghost.

That is the Cathlic Tradition. Your parents are not infallible. The Pope is infallible.

I have done that.

🤷 In that case you knew the answer to your question already and didnt need to ask it.

Our Holy Father is not always infallible. I believe we went over that in the thread that was deleted.

The patience of the Holy Father and the Cardinals involved is really unprecedented.

These Bishops need to swallow their pride and awknowledge who is in charge.
You know, quite honestly, I have always been sympathetic with Traditionalism.

I have attended the EF Mass almost exclusively for 10 years.

All of my children also attend the EF Masses.

But, the Holy Father’s charity toward and tolerance of the SSPX, despite their behavior, gives me such a newfound sympathy, and admiration and, I guess love, for the Holy Father.

In my opinion, he has acted out his Faith in charity so much more than this group and provided such a great example to them, and to all of us.

It seems like every time the subject of SSPX comes up, no matter how objectively the topic is discussed, someone has to decide that there is "bashing, " and the thread is closed.

I guess unless there is nothing but a positive and accepting approach to all things even remotely related to SSPX, the thread has to close.

Take for example the fact that a mere report was being made, copied and pasted, and linked to a website that is 100% pro Pius X Society. The very next remark is, “close the thread.”

This happens to be the same person that continually accuses me of “having an agenda,” yet manages to get every thread related to SSPX closed and/or completely removed , and always after “they” (it’s always the same two) have all of their remarks recorded. Then, no one else is ever allowed to reply.
No one else can reply ?

Looking over these threads on the SSPX, it seems the same thing is repeated over and over. What would you say that you have not said already ?

Why is a group of clergy who have never preached dissidence, error, or heresy constantly slandered and hated, when large groups of clergy supposedly in full communion who do promote such are never mentioned ?

The answer seems clear. The contemporary Catholic mind has been poisoned by a new religion so far removed from true Roman Catholicism, that tolerance for dissidence and heresies have become commonplace.

Kyrie eleison

The Pope, like our parents, is not infallible. Only in areas of doctrine. I quote from Catholic Encyclopedia; “It is only in connection with doctrinal authority as such that, practically speaking, this question of infallibility arises”.

Vatican II was not a doctrinal council. Pope John XXIII himself stated in his Opening Address at the beginning of Vatican II that the Council was not intended to be a doctrinal council concerned with defining any articles of Faith; rather it was to be a “pastoral” council that was concerned with representing the Catholic Faith in a manner acceptable to the modern world.

Now, I’d like to ask you a similar question to the one you have asked. In my time on this forum it has become obvious that a lot of Catholics, probably the majority, wilfully disobey the Pope, in areas such as contraception, abortion, attending mass, confession, belief in the true presence, belief in the existence if hell, morals, etc etc etc.

How can you, and those who sympathize with this vast number of Catholics, justify this act of willful disobedience, that at it’s very core is the antithesis of being Catholic?

Double standards are a trait of the contemporary Catholic mindset. It’s obvious.

My understanding of the SSPX situation is that it really all boils down to AB Lefevrbe consecrating 4 Bishops without the approval of the Holy Father.
And my understanding is that the FSSPX situation boils down to the legal construction of the fraternity/order back in 1970 and attempts to bring it (and Trent, Quo Primum, the TLM, Veterum Sapientia, etc.) down in every way possible since then. Had there been more widely acceptance of the fact that the TLM was never abrogated, then perhaps there would not have been the four illegal (but valid) consecrations.

A prelate CANNOT disobey the pope in such a matter. What kind of a precedent are you posing?

Indeed! I also enjoy the EF. I now attend a Maronite parish however,

What is more remarkable is understanding Benedict’s former role in the Church as the primary articulator of Dogmatic issues and discipline and his change of emphasis as Pontiff. The Holy Spirit is truly working through him.

The Pope doesn’t have to be doing ANY OF THIS work with SSPX. He doesn’t need the SSPX but he cares for them, even in their obstinacy. They are effectively questioning HIM!! CHALLENGING HIM!!! It’s crazy!!

But how far can this really go? How patient can Benedict be?

I don’t think I’m bashing anyone. Do you guys ever check out the politics forum?!? Not there you will see some real bashing!

At this point it’s probably in everyone’s best interest to lie low a bit and just pray about the situation, rather than discuss it.

I’ll try to offer a brief answer to your question.

First, legally speaking, no one really disputes that the boss was disobeyed.

But that’s not really the issue.

The issue, as you correctly said, is “tradition.”

To traditionalists, “Tradition” means more than obeying the pope. It means the doctrines and the methods of worship that have been passed down since time immemorial. Of those traditions, obeying the pope is one. It is not the only one, nor is it always the paramount one.

If the hierarchy abandons the traditions of the Church, then it is needful to protect the traditions even at the risk of disobeying their commands. To draw a simple analogy from the civil context, if a driver has to avoid an accident, it may be permissible to swerve out of a lane without giving the proper signal, even though that itself constitutes an infraction.

If you follow the Greek Orthodox discussions with Rome, the same general theory can be seen in that debate also.

What is even more interesting is to ask how such differing ideas of what constitutes tradition came to arise.

How is it that one set of Catholics perceives tradition in one way, while another set perceives primarilly as allegience to the hierarchy? When did this rift arise?

Hope that helps!

I’m new to much of Catholism and need someone to explain what SSXP and FSSXP are?! Also, what is the problem??? Could someone give me a general explanation please?

Thank you,
mlz

In answer to your first comment the Pope can not err when pronouncing on Faith and Morals, not “in areas of doctrine.”

Second, the Pope must be assented to and obeyed, even when he is NOT speaking infallibly, that is Doctrine. He alone is able to reform what he has pronounced (fallibly), no one else may judge the Pope. So, if SSPX has a problem with something, they may formally request that the Pope pronounce on that thing, but they MAY NOT ABBROGATE to themselves the power of the Papacy. There is no such thing as privitized judgement. Only the Pope gets to decide what is the teaching of the Church.

“It is not to be thought that matters proposed in [Papal] Encyclical Letters do not in themselves command assent because (in Encyclicals) the pontiffs do not exercise their supreme power of their magisterium. For these things are taught by the magisterium, to which also the words apply, ‘He who hears you, hears Me’.”
Pope Pius XII

“God has given to His Church a living Teaching Authority to elucidate and explain what is contained in the deposit of faith only obscurely and implicitly. This deposit of faith our Divine Redeemer has given for authentic interpretation not to each of the faithful, not even to theologians, but only to the Teaching Authority of the Church.”
Pope Pius XII
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Let the teachers in ecclesiastical institutions be aware that they cannot with tranquil conscience exercise the office of teaching entrusted to them, unless in the instruction of their students they religiously accept and exactly observe the norms which We have ordained.** That due reverend and submission which in their unceasing labor they must profess toward the Teaching Authority of the Church, let them instill also into the minds and hearts of their students.”
**- Pope Pius XII, Humani generis, 1950

Obedience to the Magisterium and the Pope is what the SSPX Doctrinal Preamble is all about. Please note that the Preamble contains the very word DOCTRINAL in its title. It is about the DOCTRINE of obedience to the Holy See. Apparently Rome doesn’t agree that SSPX is within their rights to decide what is and what is not to be believed.

Now in regard to this:

*Now, I’d like to ask you a similar question to the one you have asked. In my time on this forum it has become obvious that a lot of Catholics, probably the majority, wilfully disobey the Pope, in areas such as contraception, abortion, attending mass, confession, belief in the true presence, belief in the existence if hell, morals, etc etc etc How can you, and those who sympathize with this vast number of Catholics, justify this act of willful disobedience, that at it’s very core is the antithesis of being Catholic *

Of course they aren’t just wilfully disobeying the Pope, they are sinning against God. No one is justifying willfully disobeying the Pope on any matter whatsoever. The Pope, acting in the place of God on earth, is to be obeyed in all matters of faith and morals. Disobedience to God and God’s Vicar is the very definition of sin. Many of the people who believe such things and perform such acts are not acting so much out of conviction, but rationalizing their bad and sinful behavior.

In any case, they are not trying to “institutionalize” their sinfullness. They are not going to Rome and saying “we will not serve until you give us our way.” It is their own privately held opinion. In other words, they aren’t trying to form a “Society” that condones all of the things you mentioned.

So your argument fails on two levels.
First, no one is sympathizing with sinners.
Second, individuals who hold wrong and sinful beliefs contrary to the Church’s teaching can not be compared to a group of people who have formed a “Society” in order to go against the Pope and the Magisterium and force their own collective** opinion **on the Highest Authority in Christendom.

And, please note that the SSPX’s viewpoints are merely OPINIONS. They have no authority whatsoever to have any sort of OPINION which contradicts the teaching of the Church and continue to call themselves Catholic.

A prelate CANNOT disobey the pope in such a matter. What kind of a precedent are you posing?
lol…I hardly think the SSPX set the precedent.

I also think our poor Holy Father is facing disobedience every which way he turns at the moment. We need to pray for him.

Illicitly consecrating a Bishop is a HUGE act of disobediance and is highly dangerous as I’m sure you can imagine. Where a Bishop is- there is the Church.

Folks are saying “illicit but valid” and that is indeed true, and in that fact lies the tremendous danger in unauthorized consecrations.
