I know I like the ceremony because I’ve seen videos of it online. But I didn’t know if it was from a schismatic church or something and whether it was a licit form. Also, I’ve read about the ceremony online. Again, I just didn’t know if it existed as a valid form these days.

Also, thank you to the previous poster for your support. (p.s. I’m a man, not a “her”)

My daughter & her husband had their baby baptised in the older Latin ceremony (at their request) just last year in the Arlington,VA Diocese. Just at a regular parish church.Not schismatic or anything weird. It was a lovely ceremony.

I asked my Bishop’s office and got this reply:

“there is NO Extraordinary Form of Baptism. What we now have is the only VALID form for Baptism!”

How can this be? I don’t understand. Does anyone have any references that I can send? Thank you.

Art. 9. § 1 The pastor, having attentively examined all aspects, may also grant permission to use the earlier ritual for the administration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Marriage, Penance, and the Anointing of the Sick, if the good of souls would seem to require it.

Summorum Pontificum, the motu proprio from Pope Benedict XVI, would disagree with your local bishop’s office.

Did you tell them that you can baptize your own child and that it can be a VALID form?

Yes, I just sent them a message explaining that she was certainly wrong as the church recognized baptisms by Baptists and Protestants and such as being valid. Also, I responded that even if she meant “licit” instead of “valid” then she is still wrong because the Pope has decreed otherwise. We’ll see what happens now.

If it makes it more palatable (probably not the correct word, but I can’t think of the right one now) to your priest, parents, possible attendees,etc. there is a special rite that was approved for the United States in 1961. It has some parts and prayers in English and the rest (like the exorcisms) in Latin. I’d be glad to send it to you if it would be helpful.

What might have confused the person you asked was your use of the word “form”. While “form” can be applied in the broad sense to include the rite and ceremonies, most often it means the “essential form” or the words absolutely necessary for validity - “I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. This is the same in both the EF and the OF.

The person might have not realised that when you were speaking of the “Extraordinary Form”, you were referring to the 1962 liturgical books. She might have thought you were inquiring about an alternative set of words for the essential form.

Thank you very much. I plan on asking them about this soon. I was going to go to the mass this weekend and then talk to someone there. I’m honestly appalled that the Office would be so wrong. Just amazing…

No problem!

It’s not terribly surprising the person in the office was so wrong. Typically they’re either liberal, and they hate the old form, or they are ignorant of what goes on in the Church, which isn’t very good.
