I know most ball room dance can be classy, but are Latin dances like the chacha, if performed decently, acceptable for Catholics to dance due to the hip movement?

Yes, they are - mostly.

At least in a ball room they are.

In a Church during Mass? No.

At home or a dance studio? Yes.

This ties in perfectly to a comment I made in another thread about Anglo-American Catholics being unduly influenced by their puritan Protestant neighbours ;). Latin dancing styles arose in very Catholic cultures.

That doesn’t mean that Latin dancing styles are inherent to Catholicism. Correlation does not imply causation. Just because it’s a “cultural thing” doesn’t mean it’s in accord with the virtue of modesty.

The type of dance associated with Latin (predominantly focused on the hips and such) has the potential to lead people into bad thoughts.

Take the show Dancing with the Stars, for example. That type of ballroom dancing so sexualized, I would never let a child watch that show.

You simply made my point. I’m not going to convince you… but traditional American Protestant notions of modesty are also not inherent to Catholicism.

Some dancing styles are immodest. But cultural context is a big factor.
In certain isolated tribal cultures, there is no sexual connotations associated with women walking around topless… to use an extreme example.

Precisely why you should never have sex standing up. It could lead to dancing.

Yes, Dancing With the Stars us disgusting but like you said, the dancing is sexualized. I’m asking if Latin Dance is acceptable if performed in a non-sexual manner (one note, hip movement in hula dancing is not considered sexual)

If you’re not bumpin’ n’ grindin’ or twerking, then you should be okay. We already move our hips every day just by walking.

I think context matters here. Who are you planning to dance with? What kind of moves do you have there, Hobbit? 😉
I would say dancing with a spouse or sweetie would be fine, but maybe you are a single male at a typical dance class (few males!) and kind of lecherous. That might not be so okay!!
