My first grader wants to learn Latin.

(No, really.)

There’s tons of resources out there for modern languages at this age level, but I’m striking out for classical languages. Similarly, he’ll start Spanish at school next year, but Latin won’t be an option until middle school. But I figure it doesn’t hurt if I can find something fun for him over the summer, at least.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I have to say I love the appeal of a prepackaged curriculum. It suits my temperament very well! I’ll have to think that over, but in the meantime I’ll go over some free resources and see how my son does with them. He does tend to stick to a thing once he decides he likes it.

For Greek, you might like Hey Andrew, Teach Me Some Greek.

For Latin, there are many options. First, decide whether you want ecclesiastical Latin or classical Latin. Here’s a useful comparison chart of some of the many options out there.

FWIW, my now-8yo announced last year that she wanted to study languages, starting with Polish. I couldn’t find a suitable tutor for her (because Polish is waay far from my wheelhouse), so we renegotiated…she’s just finishing her first year of Old Norse & loving it.

Also, check your area for language clubs - they may have children’s programs. And your local homeschool community may have additional opportunities. We have non-HSers join our activities pretty regularly, no big deal.

Good luck! 😃

Amazon has Cat in the Hat, Winnie the Pooh, Harry Potter and several other novels plus tutorials in Latin. Do keyword search Latin children’s books and Latin kids’ books.

Schoenof’s Foreign books online has The Littke Prince in Latin.
