I have not been watching the news about Pope Francis at all because I got really annoyed by the secularism.

Was the Pope going to change some masses to Latin? Which ones? Which parts of the world?

What made you think the Pope was going to do that?

I haven’t heard anything about Pope Francis changing the rules on the vernacular for the Novus Ordo, or about him trying to promote the Extraordinary Form as pope. All I know is that as soon as Pope Benedict released his moto proprio about the EF, he immediately promoted the Latin Mass in his archdiocese of Buenos Aires, like the next day or something

Wow, you’re all wrong.

If you were watching the Pope’s masses you would know his trend is away from Latin, not toward it. He speaks Latin with difficulty and is using it less and less. He is now taken to saying parts of the Mass in Italian that typically are Latin. He has never yet announced any plan to make any changes to the Liturgy of any sort.

There are no “rules” to change for the Novus Ordo. It has always been permissible to say it in either Latin or the vernacular. This is done daily all over the world. Latin is the language of the Church, regardless of which Mass form of the Roman Rite.

The Pope did not enthusiastically embrace the E.F. as Cardinal in Buenos Aires. He did not follow the dictates or spirit of Summorum Pontificum and allow priests free means to offer the E.F.

The reasons for this are complex and I don’t think we could judge unless we could personally ask him.

Many bishops are reluctant to encourage the TLM as unfortunately a tiny minority of “trads” have made it associated with anti-Jewish ideas, at least in some parts of the world. This of course is false and was clarified by Pope Benedict. But you can imagine in a place like Argentina, torn by strife and confused by socialism, liberation theology and dictatorship, and the entire spectrum of Jesuitical thought, introducing another controversial group may not have seemed thrilling at the time.

But of course, Bergoglio has never been a liturgical traditionalist, although he is a moral traditionalist, of course, how could he not be?

Both the EF and the OF were promulgated in Latin so no change there AFAIK. I understand he tends to favor the Italian as the vernacular so I wouldn’t expect an increase in his use of Latin (or any other language, for that matter). It will be interesting to hear which language he says the Canon of the Mass in places he visits, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from continuing my Latin studies.
