One reason you don’t see the TLM on EWTN celebrated by those priests is because the Bishop would not allow it. Originally the N.O. Mass there was said Ad Orientum but he forbid that also.

CatholicNerd:
Mother Angelica initially desired that the Tridentine Mass be celebrated exclusively on EWTN, but the bishop of the area would not grant her the Indult that she requested.
I don’t think that’s quite right. I spent a week living and praying with the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word (the brothers and priests in brown on EWTN), the community of men that Mother Angelica founded and which lives next door to the EWTN studio.

From that experience, I’m under the impression that Mother has always favored the Novus Ordo for her community of nuns, the friars and for the purposes of television. BUT, she did want many of the liturgies to celebrated entirely in Latin and “ad orientem” . . .

And they are, but just not on TV. At the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Mass is celebrated in the vernacular sometimes, also entirely in Latin (except for the readings), often times a mix, and always “ad orientiem.” But the bishop of the diocese in which the studio and shrine reside has mandated that all televised (Latin Rite) Masses be celebrated “versus populum.” In fact, that’s (one of the reasons) why Mass at the Shrine hasn’t been televised in years, and why Mass at the studio chapel is broadcast instead. The bishop also restricted the number of prayers in the televised Masses that can be said in Latin.

It should be noted that Mother’s bishop is actually a great advocate of her community and EWTN, and provides active assistance to them in a variety of ways. He’s just picky about the liturgical stuff.

By the way, I’m also under the impression that Mother Angelica is quite fond of the Tridentine Latin Mass, and that the primary reason is hasn’t been televised is for tricky stipulations in the current indult given by the Pope. That’s why the one to be broadcast in October won’t be a “live” TLM but one recorded last year.

Good discussions, folks! I use the EWTN televised Mass as my ‘bellweather’ for what constitutes faithful obedience to the Mass rubrics for the Novus Order. Having been to EWTN twice, I get quite charged up after an hour long daily Mass said properly.

I had the opportunity to shake hands with Archbishop Burke on Saturday evening at a Catholic Radio benefit dinner & Mass. I thanked him for his support of the Latin Mass. His response was, “you’re very welcome!.”

Who is this bishop?? Does anybody know his name, address, etc?

Offtopic, but. . .
Here’s a suggestion to Catholic Answers to have a link to a database of all church related info–dioceses, universities, monasteries, schools, priests, nuns and brothers, too.

It would help us find old priests, teachers, and friends, too!

Thank you.

This would be St. Louis Archbishop Ray Burke.
Chancery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis
4445 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63108

He’s one of the US bishops who isn’t messing around with the politics stuff…he’s doing his job defending the teachings & laws of the Church.
