When I was a kid, we had sermons. Sermons could be a good thing or a bad thing. We had a pastor moved because his sermons on Sunday were all about contributing to building a new school for us kids. On the other hand, I can recall sermons about us watching illicit movies - sermons which resulted in us taking the Legion of Decency vow. And sermons on hellfire and damnation - something I have not heard in many a year.

Homilies are directed to the readings of the day. It has been years and years since I have heard a “repent sinner” sermon.

Well, I been to many a “Churches-o-Christ” worship.
So, according to the above, (i don’t dispute), I was really listenin to Sermilies

When I was attending Novus Ordo I was a faithful listener to Rev. James Boyce on the radio when driving to or from Church. The guy had done a deep study on the life of Christ and was very interesting indeed. He was also a Latin and Greek scholar.

After Vatican II, it seemed as if none of the Catholic sermons was edifying anymore. I guess that’s what made Rev. Graham Bell so popular on TV in my family.

I can remember just one edifying NOM sermon in the last eleven years. It was last month and it was from Father Corapi.

The others I have sat through seem to be designed to not offend anyone.

I heard a really good SSPX sermon from Bishop Tissier in November. All about the sacraments and how we can make use of them in our lives to increase our piety. He even mentioned the devil and hell, something many Catholics never hear about anymore.

There is a quantum difference between the sermons I heard as a child back in the 50s and 60s and the homilies of today. Two things happened after Vatican II. First, the homily was linked to the readings. Second, because the homily was linked to the readings, the number of “fire and brimstone” homilies was pretty much reduced to the Feast of Christ the King where the readings match.

Even though I was a kid, I did pay attention. And I did grow up in New Orleans during the Civil Rights Era and I did hear sermon after sermon preached against racism and segregation. And I did see Abp. Rummel excommunicate two women on live TV over their protest against the integration of Catholic schools in New Orleans. None of this was based upon the readings for any particular Sunday.

If Abp. Rummel had had to wait for the right sequence of readings to occur…Sermilies? I wish. Mine is a cathedral parish which I have attended for the last 24 years. Can’t say I’ve ever heard the kind of sermon I heard as a kid in the last 30 years.

Linking the homily to the readings is all well and good. When was the last time you heard a homily against abortion? For me, it would have been back in the early 80s when I first started attending the cathedral parish.

The devil and hell? Hmmm, the last NO sermon I heard on those particular topics was about two weeks ago or so, and the last one before that … hmmm, maybe two months? Sin? Just yesterday (Palm Sunday). Confession? Last week of course (Prodigal Son and all - perfect opportunity!)

Needless to say queues were long this week 🙂

That’s what you get for assuming any sample of homilies you get is truly representative.

You don’t live in Canada, though. We get some pretty tame (read uninspiring) homilies here.
