What would be the best way to request a Latin mass be said in our parish on Sunday? Would the parish have to purchase items to accomplish this?

A lot has to be done. I would suggest that you get a group of people who are interested in having a regular TLM together. Make sure the bishop is not ‘against’ it (I know, I know, he isn’t supposed to be BUT). . .make sure your priest would be interested and willing to learn the rubrics. THEN and only then, research what would be needed; books, vestments, supplies, etc. for priest, altar servers, etc. What about the people? Would they need missals? What would be the best ones available? Make sure you have the budget laid out for 5 years with start up costs etc. and be generous; overestimate rather than underestimate the costs. THEN be sure you have a plan to meet the costs upfront. Have a fund already going with at least the first year’s costs up and ready; have people willing to commit to yearly upkeep. See if there are people in the parish who will commit to things like teaching Latin responses or going out and doing budgets pro bono etc. Get everything lined up, show a respectable budget, have funds ready, etc. and then —this will probably take at least 2-3 years to get ‘ready’, again be sure your priest, bishop, and as many parishioners as possible are all good to go. And of course, pray always.

It really shouldn’t be the rather involved undertaking that it is now, but the good news is that there are already many many more TLMs available. It would be a good idea to reach out to a TLM in a parish similar to yours and ask them how THEY got started and what worked best and what didn’t work so well. The more that people network and get things going, the more TLMs there will be and the quicker they’ll be set up because the ‘tools’ needed will be more widespread and more available. God bless.
