When I learned to serve back in the 1950s, we had to read the read the responses over and over again until we knew them off by heart. Mind you, that’s easier when you’re aged 8. It helped my language skills considerably.
I always take my missal to Mass. I know most of the responses by heart but it’s always good to have the missal to jog my memory just in case. I want my mind to be concentrated on prayer and not on trying to remember the right Latin words. I don’t think I ever set out to learn them intentionally. They just stuck over time.
