There was, in contrast, no logical reason for the priest to face the people which is probably why Vatican II in no way called for the priest to face the people.

I don’t understand if there is no real theological reason why we do this and Vatican II didn’t call for it then why are we doing it and why has the church allowed it?

If so, that would make the Novus Ordo (and also Protestant) orientation (or should that be “occidentation”) unusual!

Um…most Lutheran churches still have their altars “ad orientem” as do many Episcopals and Anglicans. Yes, I KNOW they aren’t really altars because there’s no valid sacrifice…but the point still stands…it’s not necessarily “PROTESTANT” to have the altar “ad populem.”

I am not sure why the Church would want to return to the old rite. Practicing the mass in a dead language seems incredibly lacking the evangelistic insight that the church of the middle ages operated with. Jesus himself spoke and conversed in the language of the day with his followers and so should be the pattern with the modern church. If we are to reach people with the message of Gods love, speaking in a foreign tongue within the mass would be evangelistic suicide, alienate those who are outside of the church. The church is the vessel to reach out to a lost world, it helps then to speak the language of the people we are reaching. I am sure God will have no trouble understanding English rather than latin.
