Hello, all. I’m just getting into the “Latin” thing and I’ve noticed some differences between the text for the Mass and the text of the Vulgate. The first instance of this I found was “Quasimodo Sunday,” which is also called “Low Sunday.” I read that “quasimodo” is the first word (two words, actually) of the Introit of the Mass, which is taken from 1 Pet 2:2. According to all the versions of the Vulgate I’ve seen, 1 Pet 2:2 begins: “Sicut modo geniti infantes” not “Quasi modo geniti infantes.” To give another example, the Introit for last Sunday, from Is 48:20, is “Vocem jucunditatis annuntiate, et audiatur, alleluja: annuntiate usque ad extremum terræ: liberavit Dominus populum suum,” but the Clementine Vulgate (taken from vulsearch.sourceforge.net/html/Is.html) has “in voce exsultationis annuntiate: auditum facite hoc, et efferte illud usque ad extrema terræ. Dicite: Redemit Dominus servum suum Jacob.”
Why the differences? Are the texts used at Mass merely paraphrases of the Biblical texts?
