Laughing at others comments

Hello.

When someone around me made what I would class as a uncharitable and sarcastic comment about a person on the television I then proceeded to laugh at that comment. Would this be a mortal sin? Obviously the person was not offended because they were not present but was my response to comment sinful?

no not a mortal sin; but we really shouldn’t laugh at dumb jokes that do nobody any good. i do it all the time and i hate myself for it. people seem to forget this commandment:

“You shall not bear false witness against thy neighbour”

When someone makes what we would call an uncharitable comment they could be giving an honest comment about how they feel about the situation or topic. Sometimes we are all judged by the way we make conversation. There have been times when I was taken to task for the words that I have said, when I was giving an honest opinion about a situation.

There is a nasty trend going on today called “Political Correctness” or “Doing the right thing”. People are looked down upon for honesty or doing something because someone else thinks it is right. We all want to be approval but what about integrity, saying what you mean and having a belief. Just because it may be dumb sounding does not mean that it is not correct, or has a sound rational behind it. That being said we all know that some people say some real dumb or outlandish things. If we don’t agree the statement why don’t challenge them on the statement and let them defend what they say. It’s either called a debate or conversation. If you laugh a perjurative statment then you are agreeing with what was said.

I truly believe that a lot of people do not have the courage of their convictions today and are looking for either quick fixes or no long term solutions. In addition, a lot of people are berated for what they think. In some cases we do not want to have free flow of opinions just an assurance that what we believe is correct.

We have seen this all to often in references about religion and politics.

While I can see no good reason why this woman has a job with any authority, I’m impressed with the restraint her audience exercised not throwing tomatoes at her. Personally, I would have made better use of my time with a rest room break.

So, although she deserves to be laughed out of a job she’s unqualified for, should we?

You must be one of the few who seem to think the stifling of free speech and the obfuscation of the truth in western societies over the past few years is a good thing. That’s what political correctness does.

You also confuse free speech with ‘abuses’ of free speech. Stifling free speech is a far greater crime than the percieved abuses you write of. Just ask those who lived under Stalin!

The purpose behind my original post was to point out that the disjointed theory of “political correctness” allows individuals the comfort of not taking a stand for what they believe in an allows unbidled bigotry to reign unchallenged. We allow people to say what they want but are unwilling to challenge a statement in the name of political correctness.

Look at the question that is raging now about separation of church and state. The current popular politically correct stance is turning the nation into a country that is turning its back on religious tolerance for christians and jews and proscribing aethiesm (spelling?). Nowhere in our basic constitution does it say anything about freedom from religion, but that is what our courts and media is trying to foist off on us.

We have Catholic elected officials turning their back on what they were taught and are in favor of “choice”. When they die, they are still buried in the Church’s good graces even though they long ago turned their backs on its teachings. There is no price to paid, it is all in the name of forgiveness, both while they are here and after they are gone.

I believe that people who follow the path of political correctness are sheep and are following a herd mentality. Going along to get along and not raise issues. Perhaps when someday Sharia law is being more openly pushed like in Michigan and Oklahoma we can look back in humor about the folly of political correctness.

It used to be a person was considered cantankerous when he agrued, but not the new word is bigotry and destructiveness? I think not. It think it should be considered using your mind towards its best purposes to think for yourself and to be independent.
