Laughing at uncomfortable things/situations?

Anyone else laugh or crack a horrible joke at uncomfortable circumstances? I’m not happy I do this…but wonder why I do. :confused:

I feel bad in like 5 minutes that I responded that way…but it’s been something I’ve never able to change.

My aunt’s funeral was in 2001, and during it my baby cousin just filled her pants. It was super noisy and since it was a big Catholic church it echoed. I laughed a bit and got bad looks but I KNOW my Aunt would of laughed at that herself. She had a good sense of humor.

??? Anyone else feel they always have incorrect responses?

Laughing and joking at negative and uncomfortable things is very normal. It’s a defense mechanism to make the situation less comfortable. There’s no need to feel bad or self-conscious over it because it isn’t really a conscious decision you’re making.

Humor is a classical human response to intolerable situations. “Gallows humor” is a centennial genre, often proffered by the victims themselves on the walk to death, including at least two martyred saints.

Victor Frankl, IMS, also made reference to humor as a defense mechanism among inmates in the Holocaust camps.

Oh my yes.

Rule 1: The harder one tries to control it the worse the response will be.

I think we all have been there.
 
I am socially inept so i am constantly saying or doing stupid things and then regret it later. 😊
 
I have a friend who saw someone fall down a flight of stairs…bump, bump, bump, bump, and my friend laughed, even though we acknowledge it’s not funny.

I took a class in social work given by a psychiatrist, and he told us NOT to laugh. We saw so many bizarre things on film that it was just so outrageous we all laughed. The psychiatrist told us again not to laugh, that laughing was unprofessional.

Once when I was young, my brother was getting a spanking, and I started to laugh. My father said to stop laughing or I’d be next. I laughed even harder.

I once saw a motorcyclist tumble as one would see in action movies. It didn’t appear to be as real as it should have. I noticed that desensitization comes with watching TV and movies.
